Trella Hemmerly – 1935-12-31

Tuesday December 31st 1935
They didn’t come right out and tell us we don’t have to work tomorrow but I don’t believe anybody is.
Got some potato chips for Aunt May. They had Reese’s in to play cards. Had Tom and Jerry’s and wine and cookies and pretzels and cakes and a pretty good time considering. But I couldn’t help wondering what Wally was doing. Had to rush our game to make drinks for the new year. I sang Auld Lang Syne and Mrs. Reese wanted to know if it was French. She was about half tight. To bed about 2 on the Davenport.

Monday December 30th 1935
Daddy tried to get the car started from 6 to 6:15 and couldn’t (to get me to the bus) so I had to call Mr. Shelton and ride down with him. Still snowing when we left but it hadn’t snowed as much in Columbus. Bill was mad cause I was late.
Worked on my quilt tonight. Called Aunt May and made arrangements to spend New Year’s Eve with her. To bed about 10:00

Sunday December 29th 1935
Mother let we kids sleep so I got up with a headache. Alka-Seltzer made me regurgitate and another settled my head. So I felt better by evening. Snowed practically all day. Mother and Daddy had planned to go to Uncle Hen’s today but I didn’t feel well enough to take the 5:30 bus back so they didn’t go.
Had popcorn in the evening. My new red and blue PJs are wonderful for wear around the house. Bath and bed about 9:00.

Saturday December 28th 1935
Got bus at Oakland and Summit at 7:15. Home in Marion about 9:00. Daddy at home. Mary and I cleaned the house I washed & ironed. After dinner Waltl, Daddy, Mary and I went to Forest via Upper Sandusky. Uncle Hen looked so alive. Poor Mary! Kept saying “I’m all alone.” Her life would make an interesting story. We kids shoveled walks (the snow had drifted so terribly)- had supper out there. Mary hadn’t eaten anything since Friday. Uncle Hen died of a heart attack about 8:00 Friday while separating milk- immediate death. Home about 9:00. Read- bed about 11:00. Daddy’s getting to be a night owl.

Hadn’t planned to go home this weekend and while listening to the final episode of “Gail and Dan Dangerous Paradise” got a long distance from Daddy. Uncle Hen died today.
Buses left too late tonight so I’ll go home first thing tomorrow morning.
Redded up my room- arranged candy, etc. did nails with new manicure set. Bed about 9:45.

Streetcars running awfully slow. Nearly froze coming home.
Davis’ showed me their gifts mostly things for the house. Worked on quilt a little. Bath and bed at 9 to catch up on some sleep.

Wednesday December 25th 1935
Finished opening our presents this morning. Snowing made an ideal Christmas. Add chicken for dinner on Mother’s new dishes. I set them so she saw them when she got up. Played with our games. About 3:00 a blizzard struck. Dropped from 20 degrees to 4 degrees in about 1 and 1/2 hours. Bernard Brooks, Rosina, Mary, Walt and I went to see “A Tale of Two Cities” about 4:00. Too cold for coasting as we had planned. Had a snack at our house Walt and I went to bed about 12:00.

Sunday December 22nd 1935
Sunday school. About 2 we went over after Mrs. Burch and Mary to go to the hospital to see Mary Lee. She is tiny but not as small as I expected. Gave Mary the dress and slip for her. Terribly snowy. They came to our house for a little afterwards. Played with some Christmas games and had popcorn.
To church about 6:45 for seats for the pageant. We sat in the balcony. Walt helped with lights. I’ve seen better ones but Mrs. Epley was good.
