Trella Hemmerly – 1999-01-10

Sunday January 10th 1999
Just realized this book won’t hold all of 1999 if I use a whole page everyday and right same everyday
Birds flocking to feeders continually white-throated Sparrow very evident a Carolina wren flew into the eaves outside computer room window.
Finally called “Sweepmaster” and they will be here Tuesday a.m. to plow me out, I couldn’t find their number and Mary suggested I use Haynes telephone directory yellow pages.
Made chili and bean salad – Entered more Romine info for Dorothy Romine Bruce – Called Kathi they are putting up drapes – entertained neighbors.

Saturday January 9th 17° partly sunny
Well, I didn’t make it to George and Millie Brown’s 50th wedding anniversary party after contemplating it most of the day.
When I tried to drive my car out of the garage it got hung up on the ice covered snow – shoveled around tires and managed to get it back into the garage – Called George to offer my regrets and congrats.

Wrote letter to Dorothy Romine Bruce and then couldn’t find envelope with her address on it – While I was in computer room someone shovelled snow path from side door to mailbox and put the Star on the porch – who?-

Robin finished off the holly berries and his started on pyracantha.
Watched a stupid Flintstone movie on TV.

Friday January 8th
Call from Kass – Dividend on my shares will be about $2,500 and checks mailed first of the week-

Worked all day on adding the Romine data I have in to a Family Tree Maker file so I can send it to Dorothy Romine Bruce of Tampa Fla – She met Betty Davis (Mrs. Jerry) on a cruise and don’t know how my name came up – but she sent me her Romine ancestors – lived in Tenn – so probably Brothers parted ways when they left Virginia.

Tramped through the snow to the shed to get snow shovel but the rock that holds door shut was iced to cement and I couldn’t get it open.

Mary has sore throat and canceled her hair cut but but when I called Marcia she wouldn’t have time for a cut so I didn’t take the opening.

Birds are flocking to feeder have at least five maybe six Cardinals now and saw an immature white throated Sparrow.

Signed up for backyard bird count of Cornell University on the internet it is in February – 3 days. Letter from Bob Farrell.

January 6th Wednesday
A new day – feeling much better than last night – and finally can walk with my keen pain!-

Snowing most day – birds flocking to feeders – had to fill them twice today also feeding cracked corn –

Wrestled the computer out of my car and up the steps and got it reconnected – Played bird CD that Margaret and gave me and Chessie went wild trying to find the bird – knocked speaker to the floor – probed under monitor with paw – funny!

Started compiling all of Lu Carhart’s letters into one Word Star file.

Wrote to Laddie Warren to send check for $950 for 100 southbound “Day Before Yesterday”- and place order for 100 reprints of the 1907 Marion County History – called Marty and he said he didn’t have index so packaged my copy of 1907 and took it to PO in a snowstorm.

Later Laddie called me and said he had copied the index (I thot [sic] he did) and gave me figures for 150 and 200 books.

January 5th Tuesday – 7 degrees sunny
Opened new bag of oil sunflower and fed birds and that scared away the hawk perched across the road (Coopers?) – e-mails from David and Kathi – Couldn’t get motivated but did make out my agenda for Ex committee – stopped at Margaret Ann’s and she brought out to my car the bird CD for me – then I got stuck backing out – shoveled snow from under wheels until a nice boy stopped and helped & Jack Telfer also came out & with their push I got out – Wondered why Jack was also headed for Exec committee meeting soon found out!
Transformation committee met December 17th and on learning third floor was a $600,000 project (including removing the roof!) they recommend dropping project (Hurrah – that was my thinking from the beginning!) – The next recommendation was to put elevator project on hold even though we have $90,000 to do it and reserve that money toward purchasing the YMCA building (possible 400,000) I objected saying money was given for elevator! Upset me terribly and I went into a chill –
Pete Laskaris brought my computer out to car – I’ve spent evening trying to warm up and get over shock of putting off elevator.

Wrote Dave a letter and retrieved e-mail on old computer. Kathi forwarded one from Dave and he doesn’t think he was in it (the broadcast from the carrier Carl Vinson) – Kathi and Bob going to Reno and Fallon tomorrow by plane and then will drive the Pontiac back to Henderson – Kathi given a ticket by Kent Fry to fly to Oklahoma City January 19th to visit Kristi.

To PO to mail Lou Carhart letters to Dave – camcorder cord to David and Harding defense to doctor EE Beauregard. Got lard at Reese’s to feed birds

Unplugged computer and got it in car to Marion and picked Mary up and she with me to Laskaris to leave computer – picked up food at Wendy’s – dropped Mary off and to Coliseum to meet with Fair board to make plea for prairie plantings at fairground – Gale Martin had proposed plantings and a slideshow and I gave background info – Voted unanimously to permit prairie gardens in two areas-
Mary Ellen Dune and Kensel Clutter also there.
Message on answering machine “Computer fixed – it was a virus no systems or data lost no charge.”

About 6 inches snow on ground and ice on top of it – road a sheet of ice where it was plowed-
Worked on Lu Carhart timeline – wrote emails on old computer
Paid bills –
Mary called – concerned because she had vivid dream that I had fallen in snow and couldn’t get up! –
So I called her after I went out to feed birds to reassure her – No church at Trinity because of ice –

Read Phyllis Whitley’s “Poinciana” and “Dorothy Lang’s Ireland” that David gave me for Christmas –
Called Pete Laskaris and he said bring computer in.
Am always reminded this time of year of one of the few poems I ever wrote:
“My best kept diaries
Through the years
Stop short with
January’s drear careers”
