Trella Hemmerly – 1980-04-06

Sunday April 6th
Cleaned the house a.m. Howard and I walked in woods. Flood this week eroded banks more. Lost more land this winter than in previous 10. Mary, Mother and Kenny came about 4 and I walked down with them. Grass so green all through the woods. Hepatica, Scilla and a few spring beauties just opening. They left about 6 and David and Karen and kids came about 7:30. Had three baskets with flowers and candy hidden for kids Sarah didn’t pick them up cause they didn’t look like Easter baskets to her! Showed some of my Arizona slides and served my fresh pineapple, date and black walnut salad with Knott’s Berry Farm dressing. But David wouldn’t even taste it. Karen said it was good. Offered David manager’s job at Hemmerly’s as of January 1st at $20,000 a year. He made $14,000 in market last year.

Saturday April 5th my 33rd Easter as a florist since 1946 when I sent out letters to sell corsages.
Showroom full all day. Kept two girls making up corsages to sell on floor. But had all deliveries out by 2:30 except a few that came in after that. Didn’t turn down any orders for lack of merchandise or time. But thought we must be way down on sales until Cheryl did they register reading about 4:30 which showed $7,500 in sales with no charges run for today. Receipts about $6,000. Call David to remind him to bring auto insurance policy so I can get refund. We both carried Insurance all year. Fixed 3 Easter baskets for kids with silk flowers, Chenille toys and grass to cradle Easter candy. Home by 6:30. Passbook on former Keogh fund in mail from Home Federal. $101 interest in one week!! Only got $1,000 from Metro in a year!
Saw Blue Winged Teal and Baldpates in route fogers Meadows where they were flooded.

Friday April 4th
Everything running so smoothly we must not be as busy as usual. Send Mary an Azalea with her film. Got buns at Nichols & stopped to see mother. She doesn’t see why Mary and Ken are going on a trip. “Gas is too high.” “They don’t care about me.” “The weather might be bad.” “There is a volcano going to erupt in Washington.” Randy Weosner made sloppy joes and relish plate. Lil made deviled eggs in apple pie. All ate at 6 but only worked until 7:30.
Letter from Jackye, returning the $50 check I gave her for gas. Told me to apply it on my next airline ticket. They got 2 three wheel motorcycles and says we can go any place now. Reading “Betty Zane” by Zane Grey.

Thursday April 3rd
Still slow on orders although showroom was busy. Sent Azalea to Kathy and Bob and Kathy called me about 6 to thank. Tal Burkett at home Federal called to suggest that we roll over the Keogh funds to an IRA fund to avoid custodial fees. Went to Home Federal Savings and Loan and signed necessary papers. Routed for tomorrow after everyone left at 6. Picked up chili to take home. Bought three rolls Polaroid film for Mary’s birthday tomorrow. Didn’t go to Quest Club as Carroll Neidhart was speaking and I was tired.
Figured the income on retirement in 1981. $6,000 from $33,000 and $6,000 IRA and $10,000 IDS Annuity using interest-only. $6,000 Social Security tax free- $4,000 from rents- $5,000 salary from Hemmerly’s- $5,000 dividends and $2,000 interest on deposits. Which is just what I draw in salary. Now pay $10,000 income and Social Security tax so we’ll actually have $5,000 a year more spendable income.

Dwaddled[sic] the day away. Played piano, sorted books, put away one’s Howard has put “see-thru” protective covers on. Mary gave them to me for Christmas about three years ago.
Took a walk in the woods with Howard. Still cold and not much signs of spring.

Worked in Greenhouse am. Separated Irish moss and Scotch Moss that I brought from California. Took cuttings of begonias and streptocarpus saxoriena.
