Joy (PR development director for OSUM) came out for my autograph in “After 40 Years” as a gift from her to Ted Graham developer of Marion Industrial Depot. Hour chat. Tuesday September 21st
Picked Mary up at 9:15 and to Boyd’s to view Helen. Then to cemetery for graveside service. Very short and No obituary read or audience participation or music. A few flowers, but I left a memorial contribution. Had planned to go to Miriam’s funeral at 1 but couldn’t face another one so came home. To MCHS board meeting with incomplete nominating report. Usual hassle over trivials. Carol Neidhart there to report on log cabin repairs. Says he will have it finished by September 30th!. Darin and Jen came out to talk about their gift to me of a tree. I had decided on a Scarlet Oak q. coccocina. Then fed them apple pie and ice cream. Nice kids now living in Chicago. Call Sue Speakman and asked for $20,000 from trust fund.

Monday September 20th
Big day at last. Picked Bob up at 8 a.m. and to Harding home. Charlie Evers told me there was a rumor going around that I had died. I told him it was my sister-in-law. Program aired at 9 a.m. until 12 a.m. Bob held his own against his former student Gene Trane who wrote a Harding book in 1975. All from previously published material Bob said. Drizzling rain but Ken Hamentrack was a credible Harding delivering his notification speech. Good points. Just caught the end of my brief appearance (on tape) telling of shaking hands with Harding during front-porch campaign the group around the video enjoy my editorial remarks on Trane’s. Home and relaxed, but didn’t go to EHMA program meeting- Randy Winland and I’ve seen his program.

Sunday September 19th
Cleaned up the house a little and swept walks. Called Country Inn about 1 and Bob answered but Lila had gone on to Bronson Michigan to visit her sister.
To see Margaret Ann and took bean salad. She is so thin and nervous.
So I picked Bob up and took him to Harding Home where C-SPAN crew were setting up for tomorrow’s broadcast. Met Mark Trask producer (looks like a young kid!) again.
Crew all very friendly. Took Bob for a ride along Vernon Heights Boulevard and drove in at Islay / Miller’s to see garden. He closes his book on Harding with a reference to the area. Then out to Terradise to see it in bloom- his other visits were in Winter. Showed him Civil War letters. He had edited a group like it so can appreciate my work. Also plans for remodeling. Had dinner at Appleby’s. Stopped to see Mary in Marion before coming out here. Steak for each of us. Took him back to Country Inn about 9:00.
