January 5th Tuesday – 7 degrees sunny
Opened new bag of oil sunflower and fed birds and that scared away the hawk perched across the road (Coopers?) – e-mails from David and Kathi – Couldn’t get motivated but did make out my agenda for Ex committee – stopped at Margaret Ann’s and she brought out to my car the bird CD for me – then I got stuck backing out – shoveled snow from under wheels until a nice boy stopped and helped & Jack Telfer also came out & with their push I got out – Wondered why Jack was also headed for Exec committee meeting soon found out!
Transformation committee met December 17th and on learning third floor was a $600,000 project (including removing the roof!) they recommend dropping project (Hurrah – that was my thinking from the beginning!) – The next recommendation was to put elevator project on hold even though we have $90,000 to do it and reserve that money toward purchasing the YMCA building (possible 400,000) I objected saying money was given for elevator! Upset me terribly and I went into a chill –
Pete Laskaris brought my computer out to car – I’ve spent evening trying to warm up and get over shock of putting off elevator.

Wrote Dave a letter and retrieved e-mail on old computer. Kathi forwarded one from Dave and he doesn’t think he was in it (the broadcast from the carrier Carl Vinson) – Kathi and Bob going to Reno and Fallon tomorrow by plane and then will drive the Pontiac back to Henderson – Kathi given a ticket by Kent Fry to fly to Oklahoma City January 19th to visit Kristi.
To PO to mail Lou Carhart letters to Dave – camcorder cord to David and Harding defense to doctor EE Beauregard. Got lard at Reese’s to feed birds
Unplugged computer and got it in car to Marion and picked Mary up and she with me to Laskaris to leave computer – picked up food at Wendy’s – dropped Mary off and to Coliseum to meet with Fair board to make plea for prairie plantings at fairground – Gale Martin had proposed plantings and a slideshow and I gave background info – Voted unanimously to permit prairie gardens in two areas-
Mary Ellen Dune and Kensel Clutter also there.
Message on answering machine “Computer fixed – it was a virus no systems or data lost no charge.”

About 6 inches snow on ground and ice on top of it – road a sheet of ice where it was plowed-
Worked on Lu Carhart timeline – wrote emails on old computer
Paid bills –
Mary called – concerned because she had vivid dream that I had fallen in snow and couldn’t get up! –
So I called her after I went out to feed birds to reassure her – No church at Trinity because of ice –
Read Phyllis Whitley’s “Poinciana” and “Dorothy Lang’s Ireland” that David gave me for Christmas –
Called Pete Laskaris and he said bring computer in.
Am always reminded this time of year of one of the few poems I ever wrote:
“My best kept diaries
Through the years
Stop short with
January’s drear careers”

Eula Rhodes called about a saying Heritage Hall closed today forecast for big winter storm but only fine snow came down until about 10 when really snowed heavily. TV making a big to-do. I guess areas south and west had it worse.
Spent most of day at kitchen window going through Lu Carhart’s Civil War letters to excerpt locales and battle info. Printed out another five letters to send to Dave and sent him an email with the 1883 Marion County history report on 96th regiment.
Left a disk in A: Drive and when I turned computer on I couldn’t access Drive C:
Was out only to feed birds – Some at feeder all the time added goldfinch, dove, tree sparrow, flicker (flying), cardinal, blue jay, starling.

Watched part of the Rose Bowl parade on TV but sun obscured the screen so was difficult to see – so spent most of the morning at the kitchen window watching birds at feeder. One Robin still around- it was left after the others flew on. Two crows showed up at across the road and at feeder and titmice, white breasted nuthatches, Carolina Chickadees, house finches and sparrows, song sparrow, juncoes, red bellied and downy woodpeckers.
Invited Mary out for roast pork and sauerkraut boil potatoes and bean salad.
Read Phyllis Whitley’s “Lost Island” one of Mary Prior’s paperbacksWent to bed while Ohio State scored 24 and Texas Aggies seven.
Mary called to tell me to turn quick to channel 10 – just caught last 15 seconds of news story from the Carl Vinson – called Kathy as she gets it later she was able to videotape it. .

Spent morning getting questions ready for Brenda at Manter Culp Holbrook Accounting at 3:30. Cheryl and I went down she was all apologetic for $10,000 error which was Cheryl’s to begin with but Brenda should have questioned a $10,000 adjustment to accounts receivable! I sure did.
Also gave her FTD financial management book after she foundered on the questions I asked.
Picked up program books at Big Red. Took dues and Jax to Irma Campbell. Rewrote Miriam washburn’s secretary minutes and took to her. Conference with Lil she wants off all of January to go to Florida with friends.
Tim Albright of Social Security called me to enroll me in Medicare as records show that I will be 65 in November. He took info over phone and will mail application to sign. Looks like I will have $650 to $700 a month as I won’t start collecting until at least 1982.
Gave talk to senior citizens of Timothy Lutheran Church on Philippines. They were enchanted. Held at LanJour Restaurant.
