Thursday, August 11, 1983
Blacktop men here with grading machines. Decided to grade to the south to get water away from house – Dug 1/2 bu. lycoris bulbs but didn’t save much else on that bank except August lilies.

Put old blacktop in narrow spot down by Murphy’s* – hope the honeysuckle vine grows back over it. Makes more land there to walk on.

Wednesday, August 10, 1983
Up at 4:30 – At Cols airport by 6:30. Frontier flight on time with Dave on it bound for Reno. Home by 8:30 – Howard & I trimmed sweet gums, shingle oak & red oak trees. Dave told me that men from Electric Co. that were working along here yesterday gave him rope & helped his string it across the river & he went over on it. When I looked at it I have doubts any men helped him – It’s 30′ ft above the river!

Napped in PM & finished Anya Seton’s Green Darkness. Called Kathy – Bob not cooperating on Dave’s visit.

Tuesday, August 9, 1983
Mary brought mother out about 1:30. She would hardly speak bu recognized Howard. We opened her birthday carads while she was here. Had about 6 – 93 yrs old & so pathetic.

Had first 3 ears of corn from garden across road – oh so sweet.

To Altrusa meeting from 7 to 9 – Dave made fuss over packing things I sent to Kathi

Monday, August 8, 1983
David H. woke me at 8:30 coming in my room to get my computer to use at shop today. Went in about 10 & we put 1981-82 black book figures – the percentage are so interesting.

Took sweet corn to Mary’s for lunch.

Back to shop & worked until 5:00.

Mary called about 6 – Ken in hospital! Had chest pains but think it is pneumonia. Started antibiotics.

Sunday, August 7, 1983
Dave didn’t get up until 11:30 but then he helped me like I had hoped he would ever since he came a year ago. We reset patio blocks & bricks. Howard has cut off all high vegetation on all bank facing river.

In to Historical Center at 4 – Just closing – Open in memory of Pres. Harding funeral. To see Mother for 45 min. I fed her. She is so pathetic.

Home & watered garden across road with 12 gallon water. Watched All the President’s Men Watergate scandal.

Paid bills & balanced check book – Sent Kathy $100 to use while Dave is there plus Dave’s $25 allowance. She called about 3 & had put a note in Bob’s lunch telling him Dave was coming. Howard & I cut euyonomus, viburnum, japonica off bank below patio & greenhouse. Called Walter Aures & he will push excess doil over bank to make it mowable when he re-does drive.

Helped Howard cut out the 30 yrd old euyonomus vine on bank below patio. Had gotten overgrown. Hope it comes back tamed. To Garden Club at Ginny Scantlands. Gorgeous home among trees. To Gloria Marshall. Picked up Dave at shop & took him shopping at Penney’s for sneakers, jeans, briefs, $48. Took check $172 to Millisor’s for materials to paint & paper Toulon*. They did a good job. Then to Hutchman’s for dinner – ham loaf – delicious. Toured garden & showed them snaps of my trip. Home at 10. Dave rode home on bike.

Dave & I picked Mary & Ken up at 8. Drove to Prairies on RR right of rail at Rt 4 & 36 – Pix of Silene Regia & other prairie plants. To Piqua by 10:30 to visit Minnicks at 910 Caldwell. Bipp had the cookie jar (hand blown glass) from Sheneman’s corner grocery store that Laura had told me about & she gave it to me. Lovely lunch & then we went to Laura’s house (8th chile of Josephine Hildreth & Sylvester Bell.) She died July 15. On to Ohio Caverns to meet Bill Winegartner & family. Toured cave. Stopped at Ray F’s at E. Liberty & pd him $80. Del Goff, Marcella Haldeman here while I was gone.

Typed the Burroughs Club Program Book 10:30 to 2:30 – Took to Nan Weir on way in to town. To Mother’s – wrote Hemmerly Reunion Cards while she ate – I fed her.

Supper with Helen Romine at LK – stuffed pepper & rice $2.99 – Then to Palace Theater to see Marlon Brandon in On the Waterfront. Split a banana split at Isaly’s after the movies.

Dave work on his cave & discovered a sand deposit in the river bank.

Tuesday, August 2, 1983
84 nicest day since I’ve been home.
Ray Foertsch out to install air conditioner & 2 bug lights – reposition TV antenna, repair linoleum where burned by iron in kitchen, install 2 new toilet seats (after 30 yrs use!) Dave trimmed along steps to river.

Picked Mary & Ken up at 11:00 to go to Jessie & LOren Bakers for lunch & then to Jessie’s daughter Maret’s herb garden. Then to Behlehem barn. Found Earl Gray tea like Helen Lamb served. Supper at Hardy’s & home.
