David called at 9 asking me to come to shop to help set up general ledger on computer. Got Royce started & got in by 11:00 in time for farewell party for Mary Walker Page who is pregnant (March) and has resigned. Discussed financial statement with Kass, Cheryl & David & then worked on GL – putting June 30 figures in. Intensive brain work. Others watched US Open* Parade but we worked right thru it. David left for home at 8:30.

Sunday, July 31, 1983 [in Roseville, OH at Stokely House]
Slept until 9 after a fitful night. Ancestor ghosts hovering, I suspect. After breakfast took walk back to graveyard but it is hopelessly grown up. Then got date the uneven part of the bookcase in the living room. Found David Stokely’s will and a note signed byu Elizabeth Hildreth (her mark) for $2,000 – which explains the “for hay what she has already received.” in the will.

Home by 5:30. Dave called & I went in to pick him up.

I slept in the new (1840) part of the house. Had been Marguerite’s sons, Robert & David’s room but I pictured David & Abigail Hurlbut Stokely sleeping there. Up at 7:15 & drove to Marietta via Rts 93-37-60 – Rough, hilly gorgeous views. Genealogy Conference not too exciting. Topic was to have been research in S.E. Ohio but Carol Bell, speaker, talked in generalities. I bought Joseph Barker’s Marietta Reminiscences – mentions Benoni Hurlbut. Won year’s subscription to N.E.G & HS quarterly as door prize. Car froze – started when when aI stopped for canteloupe so didn’t get back until 5:30. Man came to fix light switch.

Left about 9:30 for Roseville to visit Marguerite Stokely Maddox at the Stokely homestead for the weekend – Beth Inman her companion left as soon as I got there & Marguerite started unloading her troubles. Beth is not kind to her – Probably first time in Marguerite’s life she has been so treated. She pads bills & has stolen from Marguerite’s purse. I took food for our meals but Marguerite had money pinned to her bra to take me to dinner. She is almost blind. Optic nerve gone. She needed someone to talk to.
