Trella Hemmerly – 1980-04-30

Wednesday April 30th secretaries week up $400 over last year. Did the letter help?
Don Decker called asking me to pay Dave and Kris’s airfare from Columbus to Reno after he pays fare for them to come to Boston. The plan was that he would pay all of the fare when he asked the kids to visit him. It would cost me $400 to oblige! Told Kass about David’s plan to commute and manage Hemmerly’s. She was aghast that Karen wouldn’t move to Marion if David took the job.
To Mary Jordans for dinner as Marilee is still convalescing there from a stroke. Good sausage pilaf and rhubarb.
Margaret Barnhart and Isabel Stump came to Terradise to pick violets for Quest Club favors tomorrow night. Ellen Nesbitt, Laura and I made 7 baskets for centerpieces of Terradise Forsythia and daffodils.
Called Kathy at 11 told her of Don’s request. Sky blue from Oklahoma City to Boston said Kristi doesn’t want to go. Told her of David’s plan- Including airplane- she said that’s impossible- too costly. I agree. David called to tell me Kass had called and wanted to talk to her[?sic] and Karen. Kathy called back at 12:15 with Don’s number at Wright-Patt.

Tuesday April 29th
In at 9:45 in time for David to watch Dave buy from Claproods. Lunch at Hardee’s and David said he is impressed at the efficiency and smoothness of her operation. But Karen would never move to Marion. Said he came prepared to convince himself that he would not want to manage Hemmerly’s. But sounded more attractive than he thought.

Monday April 28th
David at shop at 10:30. Followed me around on a typical day- salesman, checked in merchandise, advertising copy to get ready, lunch with mother, mail to go through. Showed him books back to 1958 when Hemmerly’s did $48,000 a year. Do that most months now. And some months more.
Dinner at Lan-Jar Restaurant at corner of Oak and West Center newly-opened by Helen Loudon. Don’t order chicken breasts!
Typical evening at home after walking around Pond. TV and popcorn.

Nice little 15-minute ceremony taped by WMRN. About 20 people there. Drove mother through Vernon Heights & Chateau Ridge to see the Forsythia blooming everywhere. Howard and I cleaning up in woods when Del Goff and family arrived in their motorhome. By family I mean 15 people. Everyone of his six kids and grandkids and 2 in-laws! Toured the grounds and they came in. Kids all well-behaved.

Thursday April 24th
Karen and kids left for Columbus right after breakfast. Linda visiting so they went to visit Eric. David had a typewritten proposal ready showing how he could manage Hemmerly’s by commuting in company own airplane between Marion and Cincinnati. Even had a 10:00 flight scheduled to show me a plane! I would not go! Showed him how he could commute with two trips a week. He made $10,000 last year at Market & about $4,000 playing so has to do something to support his family. I had offered him $20,000 to manage Hemmerly’s but not on a part-time basis!
Went to Cincinnati Nature Center and hiked down to River and back up. My mind not really on nature!
Stopped at Swallen’s and used all my cash to buy film and then realized I had no credit cards to buy gas. Back to David’s he not home so asked Motzers to cash check for $10. Home about 6:00.
