Lazy morning at the Bratten’s. I got up after the others had breakfast. David & I walked over to Dents & Bent- damaged groceries. I bought cereal, anacin, canned fruit $23 – all we could carry.
In AM drove to the Pier & walked out to the shop area. Aquarium newly opened. Tropical fish spectacular. Two Deep Sea Golden Crabs mating – if successful- only 3rd mating in captivity. Stopped at The Straw Goat. Bought at 6 section loaf pan to make small nut bread cakes.
Out for dinner – Carol’s where we were headed had closed so we went to Pepin’s – a Spanish restaurant featuring seafood. Mary & I had pompano, Vivian a 23 oz. pork chop and David had grouper. Check was 460. Back home Vivian gave Mary & I had a lesson in making paper beads. I used paper in shades of mauve & aqua. Called Kathi – she had talked to Dave & Dee (Dee’s birthday) and they have an apartment in a Vitorian house. 845 Geoerge St. Vallejo, CA 945__ Called them and listened to groubles – mostly heating – low 30’s there.

Cordele GA to St. Petersburg, Fla.
Start by sunup – 7:30. To Auburn for breakfast. Temp. kept rising so it was 68 by the time we got to Ocala. Called Oakhurst Apartments for directions which we found were right but mileage were grossly exaggerated so saw most of fast-growing Ocala before found 30001 SE Lake Wieir Road. no one home at apt. but as we were leaving a man drive in. Was Mildred Grigsby’s son-in-law, John Thomas. The family won’t be here until Feb 20. He seldom comes home for lunch but arrived just when we needed him.
Wanted to go to Homosassa Springs but decided not time enough. Arrived at Bratten’s about 4:00. Vivian had a nice chuck roast dinner and we visited and visited as usual. Neighbor brought her 9-month-old son over for a visit. He’s trying to walk.

Left Cinci about 9 – David had left for Marion at 6:00 to train Evelyn on the SBT Accts Payable program (after having it for 3 years1) Also to install SBT Aocounting Program for Boyds.
Down I-75 to Knoxville & 11 E to Morristown to visit Doris Sheneman. She got home from work about 5 – we arrived 1/2 hr. earlier. 300 miles. She so interested in Sheneman family, especially Uncle Jim that she never knew. Made a 90 minute tape of reminiscences for her. Played the music box – Delicious dinner of cornish game hen, rice & Squash. I slept in the Sheneman bed that had been Uncle Jim’s.

Marion to Cincinnati
Really bustling around to get caught up before I left. Finished up the letter to the editor to tell the public that the P. O. was not for sale at $1.001 Also wrote cover letter to Charlie Evers. Went over OAHSM minutes Martha Jones sent & had corrections n every paragraph. Packed hurriedly – left home about 1:15. Stopped letter off to Charlie Evers & copy of Sales Ad application at Carroll Neidhart’s. Met Mary at Mark Street School lot to transfer my luggage to her car so thieves next door to her wouldn’t know she was gone.
To David’s around 5;00 – Karen had vegetable soup and homemade bread for supper. Some of the base cabinets are in, but no tops. Josh, Jed & Sarah hardly spoke to us but Susannah was loving as usual. Is able to recognize the letters of the alphabet. Watched the tape Kathi sent (and then forgot to bring it along). Mary & I both slept on couches. Too hard to go upstairs with my bad knee.

Bath- bkfst and off to Marion by 9:30. Stopped at Nye’s with The Huber Story booklets to distribute at the Huber Museum opening & stickers to put on the ones they corrected. Nearly had accident on ice at Reed & Church. No way I could stop – thank goodness no cars on Church St.
Stopped at Victoria Taylor’s house. Met Willis & Gwen Thoms and picked up boxes of clothing, pix letters for MCHS.
To bakery & got bread for Howard while I’m gone. 11:30 hair appointment, cut, blow dry $11. To Huber Museum at 12:15. Pictures of ribbon cutting at 1:00 by Star & Newslife.Quite a crowd, but no time to talk to the Huber relatives there. To OSUM for Charlton Myers’ first lecture on Marion County history (61 there). Only got to the Oak [sic – Owl] Creek Trail. Video taped and cassette taped for posterity. At 3:30 back to Huber Museum. 110 signed register. Talked with Brenley family from Holmes County. Otto’s grandmother was a Bickel (my great great grandmother was Julia Bickel). Shopped at Meijer’s, Big Bear & Hemmerly. Home at 6:00. Lima beans and ham for supper and collapsed until recovered to prepare info to present to Sales Ad committee as MCHS is a finalist for an ad campaign offer. Also John Hickson gave me a letter from U.S. Postal Service saying they won’t sell P.O. for $1, which we knew!

1/2″ snow & all branches ice covered. High 25. Schools closed.
Entered renewals of MCHS – created labels for The Huber Story to distribute books to those attending tomorrow. Copy of letter from Dick Edmonson to John Schroeter confirming that Edward Taylor’s uniform is at Harding Home. Wrote to John & sent his copy of The Huber Story & 1924 Marion Excavator.
Paid bills including real estate taxes – $350 on Terradise, $50 on lots across street & $340 for Bordeaux. Finally got OAHSM individual membership list from Local History Office.
Bob Snow delivered my two tables after refinishing. Cut 1/2 in. off the walnut one daddy made & with natural finish is beautiful. Small drop leaf in rec room also good job. $212 for both.
Call in to Charlie [Evers?] to find answer from Evitts to my Jan 12 letter asking for P.O. as a gift. Need it to refute Geo Snider’s claim he could have gotten it for $1.
Call from John Schroeter, Bethesda MD with best wishes for opening of Huber Museum tomorrow. He promoised his cooperation in researching and writing book on his grandfather, Edward Huber.

Dallas for last 10 years has had highest divorce rate in nation. 12,000 divorces a year. Nationally 5.2% rate. Dallas 11% rate
Entered nit picks & printed out the official copy of OAHSM Bylaws. Inadvertently hit the printer switch then made lines closer together and finally figured out what was doing it. Couldn’t send in copy to Local History Office looking like that.
In about three with cleaning materials to clean the Layman tool chest at Huber Museum. Did find planes, drills, shoe lasts, drills – tools not stolen – thank goodness. Interior is fancy with a pin-up girl in bustle & sweeping skirt, drawers, panelling.
To Center to copy 1924 Marion Steam Shovel Newspaper again & itinerary of our trip. Took copies to shop & collected $71 check for paper I bought from shop. Got copy of November financial statement. New Dimensions sure drains Hemmerly’s profit.
Supper with Mary at Copper Kettle & while she was at missionary meeting kids tried to break in her workshop window.
John Watkins called & cautioned MCHS has to get to Kurt Moreland as he is becoming Geo. Snyder’s stooge. Geo. has said he could have gotten P.O. for $1 so often he believes it. John says U.S. Postal Service never has since they’ve run Postal Dept.
David called – sewer plugged – has to have backhoe in.
