Sunny 60-70. Spring beauties & late daffs still blooming – crab apples out.
Sent e-mail to David & Kathi – copy of my notes to Tommy Hemmerly & letters to Ed Steerman in reply to his sending me article on his lepidoptera collection to Heidelberg University. Transcribed 3 more Lucius Carhart Civil War letters – also sent to K & D – sorted them by date – but this is only 17 out of over 100 letters.
Mowed upper & lower lawns – paths through woods. Dug Alaska daisies – hosta & columbine & potted them.
Watched antique road show – Tiffany lamp appraised 200,000. Sent David a check for $2,000 toward Sarah, Josh & Jed’s tuition.

Rainy –
Spent most of day transcribing Carhart letters. Called David AM & he had said with the rain the trip to Rowe Arboretum was not worth the effort to drive to Cinci – he called back late PM asking for $2,000 for tuition for S.J. & J. –
Harvey Meister is home & on oxygen for his emphysema.

Rain – total 3.2″.
Small flooding in lower woods. Up at 6:30 – bath & then spent 1/2 hr looking for key for Donnie to get in while Mary & I are in Tenn – didn’t find any. Started packing clothes & took shower about 8:00. Bev Hemmerly called from Murfreesboro – really upset about all the tornadoes in Tenn last night – Nashville downtown electricity out but rain forecast for 2 days – consulted with Mary & we decided not to risk the trip.
Picked Mary up & we went to Radnor – actually State Rt 294(?) to check out Ivy Tree to see if they had Ottawa cut stone – they don’t even have any nursery stock – guess he is a garden designer only. To Beuhler’s for dinner – worked with Mary on computer.

Chester Scott died – called shop to order flowers. Made bean salad – did laundry – to Caledonia to pick up mail to get letter from Miller Inscriptions with font she thinks matches.
In at 1:30 to meet Mary at Hap Dowlers – finalized her will & she left – discussed tax aspects of Midland Mutual Whole Life policy – will consult Bill Wisler – Hap says Treasury stock shares are assets of Hemmerly’s Flowers & Gifts & only outstanding stock is considered in determining share price. Me 130, Kathi 65, David 65, Kass 60. Kass says $200,000 – So each share is almost $1,000.
To Dr. Singh for pneumonia prescription & ear rinse. To Kroger’s for ham, buns & apple pie. To Meijr to pick up panoramic pic & brush/squeegee for Donnie to use on driveway. Home about 7:00 – exhausted & realized I had [sic – hadn’t] called on Chester Scott.
Kathi called to wish safe journey.
Having another thunderstorm – still have to pack.

Cleaned up kitchen – tried to amass info on MCHS finances for 2:00 PM meeting. Took car to McDaniels for oil change & shuttled to Heritage Hall to meet John Retterer of Streckly Sens to check out what we need for networking 3 MCHS computers – quite knowledgeable – also talked about setting up a Web page for us.
Only Phil Fox showed up for finance committee meeting but the three of us agreed that by using Quicken Office we can do without Osborne Acctg monthly statements that are a hodgepodge resulting left over from our checkbook based activity.
Jane went to supper with Mary & me after I picked up car at McDaniels – also did alignment – $98 bill.
Asked Jane to follow me out to Terradise to see the blooms – picked bokay daffs for her – showed her plants in greenhouse ready for plant sale. Gave her an autographed copy of “DBY”. Shared the Carhart Civil War letters with her. She agrees we should copy them all for transcribing & prepare one letter as we would do for our collection – hoping Ruth Carhart would give us at least one letter.

Mother & Daddy’s wedding anniversary. Married in Windsor, Ontario on the day the Titanic sank.
Got newsletters ready for 10 media in area – some with pictures. Stopped at Shaws at corner of 309 & Pole Lane to inquire about gazebo – $3500 plus $210 tax & $140 hauling – to put on deck under dead beech that has to be removed first.
To Kurt Carhart to see the Civil War era letters she has – also showed me an Annie Oakley glass target ball & the 1840 Connecticut blanket chest. The letters (50 or more) are priceless – she let me bring them home to copy but will give them to her son-in-law instead of MCHS – too bad – interesting visit.
Stopped at Wolohan & got 7 buckets of sealer/filler for Donnie to seal driveway. Picked Donnie up to unload them (not sure we needed 7 – 5 gal buckets!).
Reading Irvine Stone’s “Immortal Wife” from Mary Prior collection – we had similar reading tastes – first Ramona & now this story of Jessie Benton Fremont & her husband & the exploring of the west.
