Trella Hemmerly – 1938-05-22

Sunday May 22 1938
Late for Sunday School- Walked home & stopped at Pauline Chambers Johnson’s for a minute. First time I’ve been to her house.
Went out to our lots after dinner- Four iris blooming, pretty- but small- all the trees but one will live.
Made out Sears order for window shades- curtains- towel racks- luncheon set of dishes etc.
BY & home – Wally popped corn while I pressed things.

Saturday May 21 1938
Washed clothes this morning. Walt & Mary & I went to Richwood (via Milt’s house – he wasn’t home) to get mattress springs. Had to go out to Walt’s Aunt Ollie. Nobody home – then we found somebody down the road. Rained all the way home.
I had headache when we got home. Slept fitfully & woke about 7:00. Tommy & Jessie here.
And so to bed.

Friday May 20 1938
Stan got letter from LaSalle asking him to ask Ben to get some lessons in. He called Ben in & caught him in several lies- So Ben will not be my successor. Stan asked me to have Mary come down early & see Mr. Davis (mere formality) She got here about 2:30- Mr. Davis “too busy”. So Stan says he’ll keep me posted.
Up to my room. Loaded up my sewing machine – bookcase- boxes- while back seat in fact. Home about 7:00. Everybody thrilled about my presents.

Thursday May 19 1938
Margaret Ferguson & Evelyn Purdum entertained with a double shower for Frances Campbell & I this evening. Evelyn picked me up- during a terrible thunder shower.
Had grand bridge hands all evening. No prizes, however for me. Mable Jasper & Dorothy Kitmeier were extra guests. Evelyn served “Blushing Pear” salad. Which the girls thought quite appropriate.
My gifts were – 3 handtowels- set of bath towels- Coffee or tea pot – glass serving dish- sugar & creamer & dish – Fostoria glass – pliofilm coverall – printed lunch cloth – 6 Cannon dish towels – and set of left over dishes.

Tuesday May 17 1938
Five years ago today I went to the Jr. Sr. Prom with Walt. Our first date.
Got a candy thermometer to give to Frances as a shower gift.
Cut out and almost finished my satin wedding slip tonight.
Bath & so to bed about 10:30. Tired.
Wonder if Wally’s painting this week.

Thurs – In Walt’s letter tonight he sent the clipping announcing our approaching marriage. Published in Tuesday’s Star.

Monday May 16 1938
A week end wears me out anymore- So much physical labor.
It’s warmed up today and the sun shined a little.
Mrs. Davis seems much better this evening. Can talk much better & ate much better. I hope she continues to improve.
Stan to Lancaster again today. Before the day was over he broke all his early morning resolves- no swearing – worrying – getting angry etc.
Ben in for a while – took him 35 minutes to make a copy on the typewriter of a form trace letter I gave him.

Sunday May 15 1938
Rainy chilly weather. In the 40’s all day.
Mother to Rayl Class dinner at church and I rather spoiled ours by cooking noodles only 10 minutes.
Walt & I worked at hour house all afternoon. I washed kitchen wood work & he put flat coat on living room.
I forgot Betty Roberts asked me to review “How to Win Friends and Influence People” & so had to improvise.
Wrote out the detail for the announcement of our approaching marriage. Mother talked to Mrs. Wingett & Mrs. Wood & is acting a little better about the reception. Lots of help offered.
