Trella Hemmerly – 1938-01-29

Saturday January 29 1938
Bob & Mary & I went to Hospital this morning to get Mary J & Robert Jr. I turned the car around & Bob rushed on in so I didn’t go up with them. Mary sat in front with me & didn’t seem very comfortable. Marilee very excited.
Asleep when Wally came home from work. Took trailer out in country for Daddy- Then after supper went after milk. Had a quarrel. I told Wally his babyishness & sillines disgusted me- But we got it ironed out & went to Movie – Myrna Loy in “Man Proof” — rotten. Took a long ride afterwards & discussed finances.

Nearly overslept this morning 6:50 when I woke. But got to work on time.
Stan still feels badly – flu I think.
Too cold to walk uptown tonight so took a bus up. Had hot chocolate & got Marion bus. Off at Hospital. Bob J., Walt & Mary met me there. Up to see Mary J. for a minute. Left Bob there. Got Walt to play contract a little- then Bob came in said he’d play but didn’t need info- Bid 2 diamonds on 1 ½ H. Oh me! He stayed all night.

Little & very little bridge lesson tonight. Had 7 tables for play tonight. Evelyn took a girl home in the car with us who is leaving for Ft. Lauderdale next week – Rachael something. To bed about 12:30 & are my eyes stinging from smoke- Oh me…

4° above this morning. Turned my coat collar up around my ears this morning. Sold 45¢ worth candy today & missed the number one on the ones I gave out.
Letter from Wally tonight. Says Bob still advises not to rush into things. I wonder if he doesn’t realize the thought we’ve given it. Or does he fear War to upset earning power. ? of the world is not in war according to Father Barbour of “One Man’s Family” tonight.
Played through a few bridge hands & studied a little & bath, read & to bed.

Blizzard & was 63 yesterday & dropped to 10 today with snow and wind.
Stan got his raise. $35 per week now with back pay from the 17th. But no more rainses any place per EWL- per FA Miller – So I guess my hopes were raised falsely.
Cleaned my room, did my nails, called Aunt May & washed my hair this evening. Left my glasses at work so I shouldn’t read but my hair isn’t dry so I’ll read till it is.

Washed things this morning. About 2:00 Mary & I started up town on foot to meet Walt. Born girls picked us up. Went to Architect Rayburn’s office and found him there. Have to have 3 sets of blueprints for him. Fee $50 but I think it’s worth it. He’ll see about all the little things that have been bothering me. Down to Schaffner to see about a second hand electric stove and incidentally saw a Bendix washer demonstrated. Marvelous- Don’t touch clothes from the time they’re put in until they come out ready to hang up. Out to Bropst [probably Probst] to see stove. Nice but no base or cooker. Bob at our house for supper. Mr. Kidd, contractor, brought labor, excavating, basement, chimney bids up. About $100 more than we figured. Down to Hospital to see Mary [Burtch Johnston and baby Bob]

Stan has reformed- And can he be nice when he wants to. And his idea for expanding the Traffic Dept over the whse took their first step today. Bill Holliday is now under his supervision.
Ervin hustled around & sold 3 candy bars for me tonight bringing today’s sales to 7. Bought 6 bars at 3 for 10 cents tonight to replenish my stock.
Mrs. Miller sponsored her first “Play Night” tonight after our lesson. About 30 girls. Enjoyed it & I still don’t feel so dumb but I know I have plenty to learn.
Home & cleaned around here a little & to bed about 12:30
