Trella Hemmerly – 1979-10-14

Sunday October 14th 1979
Slept until 12. Then worked on index until 4:30. Walked down beyond shack and cut Bittersweet vines that I planted- quite a bit. All my best Bittersweet collecting areas were destroyed this spring when the Engineer’s Department removed fences along Nesbitt & Williamsport Roads. Back to work at 6 and worked until 2 a.m. Found that the H’s that Mary Brocklesby did were so out of order that I had to re-sort and re-type half of them.

Met Heckers and Vivian Blackwell at shop at 6 a.m. and headed for Cincinnati. At FIndlay Market at 9 and bought meat from David. His case looked so appetizing. Then to airport where Vivian Blackwell rented a car to visit her 93 year old uncle Price in Bethel. She will fly to Oklahoma City tomorrow to visit Bill (brother).

We headed into Indiana- breakfast overlooking Ohio River bayou. Took pictures of covered bridge on way to Nashville. Overcast and not much color yet on trees. Nashville interesting with craft shops found sale of panels at $1 each and bought 18 for shop to make decorations. Kenny not feeling well so didn’t stay long. Rather uninteresting 5 hour drive home. Went to Boyd’s to call on Fred Smith but the calling hours were five to eight.

Dinner with Jordans and Heckers and then to Palace to take pictures (slides). We can only photograph the marquee, the crowd, the sets but no players because of “Equity”. Hope my flash was working.
Twelfth Night was easier to follow and the repertoire characterizations interesting. Sat with Barbara Boggs and Virginia Howard.

Alan Kirk called to see if I would take pictures for records of the Shakespeare Festival players tonight and tomorrow. I got Barry Baker to do it in black and white.
Worked like mad all day checking index.
To Palace at 7:30 to see a fellow and sat with berry and Gene. I can see the appeal of Shakespeare to those exposed to it. The group was great- only a raised circular dias and steps to a square area for a setting.
