Trella Hemmerly – 1978-07-03

Monday July 3rd 1978
To shop while David went to Erickson’s music – very busy. At 1 went to Inskeep to pick up my new Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser. Had forgotten about insurance and had to call Marion Insurance Agency to get it. Gave them my check for $1,500 so I’ll keep the Blue Dodge. Offered it to David and Karen as a gift but Karen doesn’t want a big car (especially mine!). To Isaly’s for lunch and they left for Cincinnati. Back to work. Folded used aisle cloths- saved about $20.

Sunday July 2nd 1978 cool raining all morning.
Puttered in garden until had to go in for three weddings. Dave had delivered funeral work and stayed to help me (unloaded candelabra we had just picked up for use at church of Brethren at Berean Baptist!). David and Karen, Sarah and Josh and Mary and mother all arrived about 4. David brought steaks he had paid $1.70 per pound untrimmed. He showed his Western trip slides and movies. Some very good shots. Discussed what to do about Snoot ‘n Hoof. Too expensive to open as restaurant. Probably reopen as pizza and cold sadwiches as before. To bed at 12:30.

Monday July 31st 1978
took lunch to Buffalo River State Park in height 1 1/2 miles through the Prairie. but white Sweet Clover has taken over higher than our heads so Prairie plants very scarce. Then about 35 miles north to Felton Minnesota and asked at post office about the Prairie there. Postmaster called Mr de jardin who took us to the area 3 miles east of Felton to 160 acre areas and this was real Prairie. Buffalo wallow around rocks. He drove right through it with his pickup. Also told of Viking remains just north of there.

Friday June 30th 1978
Passed out bonus checks $150 for 40 hour people. $75 for part-timers and $50 for people less than 6 months. Dave in to my office mad as usual when he doesn’t get more than I “give” him. Said I had promised him $200. Can earn more on line at Whirlpool – “What is his future?” So I gave him a check for $50 for the dock he cut.
Two weddings tonight. Connie in since Wednesday. 13 this weekend and 2 will-call ones

Thursday June 29th 1978
Dodge only $500 less than the brand new olds.
Richard Carey called me at 7:30 to say Carl Lehner had sent letter to Ohio Historical Society about February 14th and he would be by to okay Township approval of marker. So I wrote all letters after calling ConRail’s Terry Wilson and getting their permission to set marker. Jones here cleaning. Got lunch for Howard. Into shop and post office. Mailed the letters. To inskeep Olds at 3 and drove the cream and brown custom Cruiser Oldsmobile. A dream. At 4 texturizer permanent at Head Shop and then back to inskeep with wagon. Bought it $6,600 with my car at $1,500. To MCHS meeting. Gave book reproduction sales figures $7,007 for society. Elected president. Lehner says Claridon zoning won’t allow marker.

Called Ohio State Historical Society about the Claridon Prairie marker. They wrote Carl Lehner on August 14th and had no answer. Need okay from Conrail before they can order it and price goes up $50 Saturday July 1st.
Car to Race for air conditioner repair and took out the silver Dodge wagon with 7000 miles on it. Late for wedding appointment. And then dashed home where Mary in her new Aspen wagon and Jordans and BBB and Kenny were waiting. To Jerry’s at Galion for dinner.

Monday June 26th 1978
Looked at Dodge, Ford and Oldsmobile wagons. The mid-size are too small and the big ones too expensive. Inskeep Olds has best buy. Called David to see if he’s interested in my wagon at $1,500 – he has no money – but lots of ideas on spending mine!
Picked up Marion County Historical Society Treasurers records at Straub’s to make out expenditure records for the year.
Took all morning to lay out logistics for this weekend’s 12 weddings.

Sunday June 25th 1978
Mary and mother, and Mary’s new Aspen station wagon picked me up about 10:30. Howard and I braved going down in woods to see big limb that fell from Sycamore. With “Off” on the mosquitoes left me alone.
To Medina and photographed their restored courthouse and gazebo – dinner at restaurant on Square. Then to Judy Rockwell’s. To shopping center with her. I bought light fixture, plants, blouse, half-slip, bra.
