Wednesday, January 1, 1947 [Living at 552 N. Greenwood with husband Wally Haldeman and their two children, Kathy & David]
Up at 10 after going to bed at 5. The New Year’s Party was a little caustic. What with Mary Johnston becoming “a new woman”, Bernard Brooks wolfing Florence & Ray trying to “divide himself up” among all the women.
We tested artistic talent with Kathy’s finger paint – musical ability by identifying records – poetic by writing verse – mechanical by putting puzzle together & a “Logical” test from “Coronet”. I served Waldorf Salad & Toats [sic] & cheese spread. Ray & Flo stayed & helped with the dishes for a short while. Also square danced during the evening & are coming along pretty good – to record of course.
Wrote “Betrayal” in morning & started another verse. Plumber here to move hot water heater. Wrote thank-you letters to Betty Dunn. Willard, Lowells & Doris & took a nap or tried to with kids & Walt in & out to skate on the ice rain that covered everything. Up to Nik-Nak shop for hamburgers & milk shakes for supper. Mary took our car so Ray & Flo picked us up at 6:00 to got see Crosby & Astaire in “Blue Skies”. Very good. Then out to Romines to play ping pong. I got 10 points on Ray & Wally beat me 2 games to my one. Mary picked us up about 11:15.
