Dorothy Meister, Karen’s mother, died about 11:00 a.m. of injuries in a pedestrian-car accident suffered as she left the city bus to go to the school in Cincinnati where she was secretary. [Western Hills High School]

David called me about 10:00 saying her injuries were life-threatening. I went to Town & Country Garden Club luncheon at Country Club and called David when I got home at 3:00 and learned she had died. Spinal fluids leaking and massive aneurysm, broken bones and skull fracture. Called Harvey about 9:00 and Linda had arrived from San Francisco and Eric and Cathy also there. Funeral at 11:00 Monday- calling Sunday at Bolton Lunsford Funeral Home.

Called the shop, Mary and Kathi.

Mowed leaves when I got home. Had to be occupied to relieve the great loss we have all suffered. Dave to football game at Carey and not home until 2:00 a.m.

Planted bulbs all day in the bed west of greenhouse. Tulips, hyacinth, grape hyacinths, crocus, daffodils, and reticulated iris. Still have more to plant.

Have not had a killing freeze yet. Impatiens, dahlia’s, begonias, alyssum, agerate him and geraniums still beautiful. Never remember such a late freeze date.

Dave and I met Mary and Ken for dinner at Ponderosa and then Dave and I went to the Palace to see the Chinese troop [sic] of dancers, balancers, magic, etc. very entertaining.

Kristi called with news that she made the National Honor Society. Makes the third generation to receive this honor and 5th person in our family- myself, Mary, Kathi, David and now Kristi. Dave made several comments that made me feel he wished he had tried a little harder- grades and activities. This is really the first year he has shown any concern about them.

Workshop at State Savings. 7 Girls showed up and we made wheat clusters and decorated the grapevine wreaths Howard and I made.

Barbara Shepard of Troy is a great roommate- Room is $73 a night so glad to share the expense.

Sessions all day- Ohio Association of Historical Societies and Museums [OAHSM] long-range planning. Who should we serve? How? Etc.

Cocktail party at 5:30- the front desk gave Jim keys to rooms 215 and 217 so we went in and helped ourselves to dip- kabobs- crackers, etc, before we found it was for the Sohio party instead of the Ohio party!

Dinner at the lodge.

To Blennerhasset Island- finally met Linda and Herb Roush at the sternwheeler “Blennerhasset” for the trip over and met Ray Wick, historian for the Blennerhasset Park Board. All pleased to have there a descendant of a family who lived on the island before the Blennerhassets- Benoni and Phoebe Hurlbut and children John, Abigail, Mary and Benoni, Jr.

The reconstructed mansion is beautiful- three-story Georgian with two sets of Colonnades curving to “dependencies” (small houses.)

Got to Salt Fork Lodge after dark 6 mi from route 22! Seven of us guests of Bill Nolan for dinner there.
