Mary out with her will to get help in revising it. Since she sold her house & gave to the family items mentioned in it, she’ll need a new one.
While she was here, Rich Bradley stopped by to pick up Edith Keeler’s 1938-1980 bird lists for OSUM files. And he had as a gift to me from him & Amy a copy of Peterjohns ‘Birds of Ohio’. The first ‘update’ since the 1903 ‘Birds of Ohio’ by Dawson that I have. Quite a surprise!
After they left I wrote up proposal for funding & giving under a charitable Remainder Trust $50,000 to Marion Co. Parks District – also a background statement on why I’m giving it. The money would be given to the Endowment Fund of the Marion Co. Park District.
Nice to have Wed. night TV back after 2 weeks of Olympics but I’m watching ‘America in the 40’s’ on PBS.
31 mil. registered for draft – 300+ conscientious objectors
How did we live through all that?

To HH at 9 to meet with Collections Mgt Comm – a replay of same old complaints by Betty & others on others using “their” facilities – I asked them where we have archives?
Also presented new computer study & on-line plans – adopted. Also presented letter to John Sawyer keeping door open to negotiate for Dr. Charles Sawyer’s Harding medical records (including tissue slides).
Following meeting – sorted books in glass fronted bookcase in Harding Room (- donated by Dick West & Jack Kellogg & others (Harding books) and other presidents donated by Jack Telfer (about 15). Gave report to Jane. Stopped by Jack Telfer’s office to get OK on Sawyer letter & he reminded me the $50,000 would go in the Marion Co Park Endowment Fund (not be managed by NCB as Dowler indicated).
To Harding High School to judge Science Fair Botany entries – 7th & 8th graders – some pretty poor – one on popcorn attributes used popping equipment at Wyandot Inc!

Tornadoes in central Florida & Daytona Beach. Concerned for Roger Hemmerly in DB & Hackers in Winter Haven. Sent Betty Hacker her photos used in HemGen. Wrote Tommy & Bev telling them we would come to Tenn in April for Wildflower Pilgrimage – sent article about Tommy & Mistletoe that was in Wall Street Journal to Harters since their Christmas Card had mistletoe. Wrote to Bob Harter & sent draft of our letter to John Sawyer. Called Jack Telfer to get his input on it – he said forget 1912 speech & try to get Dr. Sawyer’s papers for about $3 to $4,000 with John taking part of value as a tax deduction. Talked to Hap Dowler – he said Marilynn Haruff of Nat’l City Trust not interested in Charitable Remainder Trust for less than 250,000! I only want to give Parks District $50,000 & Terradise – must be some way to set it up.
Rewrote the Code of Ethics that John Hickson wrote in 1989 – It’s a mess – will run it by Jane.

3″ rain this week – rivers flooding on other side.
Had headache all day. Tried to work on MCHS financial records for ’95, ’96, ’97 to determine status of Publication Funds.
Had invited Mary out for pork chop supper but no pep so served her wieners & warmed over sweet potatoes.
Wrote letter to Dick Carey protesting his bad mouthing at board meeting the Ohio State University for their “stinginess” in withdrawing funding for Perkins Observatory.
Also wrote letter to John Sawyer his attitude about his meeting with Peter Gelowitz of Marion Power Shovel “He’s going to get it all”. Also wrote letter to John Sawyer letting him [know] board not funding purchase of his Harding medical records – Harding handwritten 1912 speech for $13,000 – but I think Jack & Jane should be involved.

To Trinity to speak at Mary’s circle meeting – talked 45 minutes about Marion Co Prairies – then to Dr Mike Clorans to have teeth cleaned. Then to HH – sorted 18 city & county directories that Richard Barnhart gave MCHS & accessioned most of them for education collection.
Home at 2:00 so Donnie & could re-hang medicine cabinet in my bedroom bath. Wrote up procedure for notifying members of board meeting & mailing minutes – also printed out labels for rest of year – had a 30 min rest – sent e-mail to family. Met Mary at Friendly’s restaurant for supper. Took DBY & After 40 years books to Maloney Books for resale. Bought new mattress for my 3/4 bed at Mattress Mart next to book store $265 – to HH & researched Hotel Harding items in our collections & printed it out for Jane to be ready for Scott Gerfin to write his article on Harding Hotel.
Board meeting a pleasure with Jane having a written report – committee making set up to accomplish things – it was over at 8:15 – Decision to not buy Harding Medical Record from John Sawyer – he wanted $13,000 for them! Betty Carey baked a cake for Jane’s birthday – it’s today! Watched ski jumping on Olympics

Rain.
Met Robert Ferrell at Heritage Hall but couldn’t get into locked file cabinet where Judge Myers Harding files are – ! But copied material from Ken Duckett that he brought & copied John Chester’s Kit Kat speech on Daugherty for him (1985) – took me to lunch at Maurey’s on Main St. Copied page from SD of Pres Harding where I suggested change for 2nd printing due out in fall – His Coolidge also out then & he said he would send me one.
Bob would like to see a Harding Library Repository in Marion under MCHS – gave me sources of Downes & Albright & Duckett papers that are now scattered – I suggested it would have to be a cooperative effort of Ohio Hist Soc (Home & Memorial) & OSUM (Harding Library & Ted Myers collection).
To OfficeMax to get a key to try – ddidn’t fit – Gay’s Keys would charge $45 – where did I put that key!
Had planned to go to EHMA Board meeting but was too tired. Mary called – she has her new washer & dryer installed & used it – also has a cleaning team that will come once a month for $30 – husband & wife.
