Up at 5 – bfst – Called Karen to have David meet me at gate. Ankle ok with anacin but don’t know. Helen took me to Disneyland Hotel for 6:05 bus to LA airport $6.10
Stop at Beuna Park for pickup. 7:25 Terminal. Bg checked at curb 7:44 on Plane seat 5A – 3:50 min to Dayton at 33,000′. Boeing 727 aircraft. 8:15 push off from terminal. Hazy overcast 8:33 Take off over coast & ocean thro clouds into sunshine. Circling to S. – Catalina Is peek above cloud like cotton batting solid: circling to E – mts above clouds in haze 8:45 – Headed E out of clouds – Palm Springs area 9:00 mts rising out of barren sandy desert – aswsome – Colo R aqueduct thro mt. Alkali lake bed – Parer Co. Colo R 9:10. David arrived at baggage area after I waited about 1/2 hr. He & Hink drove up from Cinci. Got to Marion at 6:00 & they marched in parade. I went to see Mother & she said Mary & Kenny were watching Parade at Church so I went to Trinity – not there but I had a seat with the Cottrells. David took bus back to Cinci.

Howard glad to see me. In to shop about noon. Terradise is gorgeous – Impatiens full of bloom. Salvias with white pompons nice combination. Big marigolds – Pineapple Sherbet.

Helen over & we left for San Diego at 9:00 AM. Off the freeway at Encinita & Poinsettia Lane led uys into some glad fields. Saw Sand Castles 15′ high on Del Monte Beach and a 1/2 mile field of tomatoes by Las Omafere Nuclear Reactor. Stopped at Scripps Oceanographic Labs & ogled the weird fish. After discarding Love’s Restaurant on Harbor Is. back to Anthonby’s Harborside for delicious lunch of clam chowder & abalone while watching boats in San Diego Bay across the prow of the “Star of India”.
Around the bay to Point Loma – astounding view of bay – San Diego & Coronado Island. Back around bay – crossed new bridge $1.20 toll & followed Rt 5 to IS off at San Clemente for supper – fruit & yogurt in a pineapple. Home at 8:30 & Bickel genealogy until 10. News & bed.

Copied photos & more family charts. Checked Chalker correspondence & found that Alva Tuthill of Columbus gave Allen the link of Jemima Tuthill to Isaac Chalker – Went grocery shopping – avacados 29 cents each!
Maile film & cards.

Mary called – Merle Peacocki died. He alwasys came immediately if I had plumbing problems.
Sure didn’t seem like Labor Day.

Finished the page by page editing about noon. Helen came over about 4 – Had leftovers that Donna gave us plus Aunt Ruth’s roast – but you wouldn’t recognize the leftovers.

Went to drugstore to get a map – no luck – but Uncle Allen had them for San Diego – First I had been away from here except for walk around the bloick since arriving Thurs.!

Saturday, September 5, 1981
Finished the Hildreth part with not many corrections of my corrections. While Allen napped I copied more family record sheets into my new little purse size record book. He has som real goodies among the pages – records in Grandpa E.M. Sheneman’s handwriting when he interviewed Eliza Riley Hildreth – etc. Went to Helen’s about 3:30 – 20 min – 10 miles on freeway & then to Mike & Donna’s for Kristy’s birthday dinner. Don & Chris came just as we did. Donna’s mother – Corinna – Brother Mokey [sic?] & wife & Barbara wife of other brother – The Italian friends Marisa V____ & 2 boys who have grown up with Timmy. London broil on grill – marinated artichokes & mushrooms – melon – white wine – birthday cake – presents – balloons tied outsie & posters. Everyon so congenial. Mike going with Don & Chris fishing Monday. Helen & I planned San Diego trip.

Mary called. 5″ rain sine Friday at their house but no flood over my garden at Terradise. Kathi called about earthquake.

Our work interrupted for 60 sec by a 5.2 earthquake at 8:51 AM this morning – and on Los Angeles 200th birthday! No damage but an eeire felling with everything shaking & the draperies undulation. Aunt Ruth hanging up clothes in the yard didn’t feel it.

Got 33 pages done – up to W, Hildreth IV – I feel some resentment any time I have consolidated repititious material! – But it is going well.

Aunt Ruth turns out tasty meals at 7:30 – 12 noon & 5:45. This fits in with TV weather reports. Mary called. 5.2″ rain since last Fri but no flood at Terradise. Kathi called – Larry knocked $300 off for tail pipe & speedometer & they have the truck at home.
