To OSUM to Ted Myers office to meet with Mr. & Mrs. Lester Howald who gave MCHS “Prince Imperial”. They wanted a document fromm MCHS accepting the gift. Told us Mrs. Howald’s father Arthur Denzer purchased it from Herman Irey who’d got it from Howser estate (Richwood great uncles of Howards).
To Mary’s to stay with Mother while they went to Columbus. Sorted “first family” information. Still need documents from Marion, Union, Knox, Licking & Columbiana Co. to prove all 19 ancestors in Ohio before 1820. Left at 5:30 for Marysville to meet Bill Winegarden whose father was bringing him that far from Fairborn. Had supper at Lamplighters. $14.80 for all 5 of us. I treated.

Dave & Bill spent evening (till 3 AM) outdoors – why does he go wild the minute he is with other kids?

2 hrs. To Zanesville – arriving at Courthouse at 10. Got Wm. Hildreth & Elizabeth Stokely marriage record & researched deeds. None transferring at David Stokely’s death in 1847. But in 1824 he bought a salt mill in sept & sold it back in Nov.!

David & family (except Sarah) arrived at 11:45. Had Dairy Queen lunch & picked up Marguerite Stokely Maddox at Sunnyview Nursing Home. She showed us where David & Abigail had their cabin (now Putnam Landing) along the Muskingum. Went up on Putnam Hill to view Y bridge & downtown Zanesville. Then down to the farm N. of Roseville. Man there mowing – place looked lovely. Marguerite showed us over house & told where most of the furniture came from. Lydia White Stokely (Elizabeth Stokely Hildreth’s sister-in-law) sheltered run-away slaves in the basement. Showed David Haldeman the barn – beams 50’ long – all pegged. And the tombstones in the granary. Then walked out to cemetery. So overgrown with multiflora roses. David had come up throught Belpre & Marietta & went back through Athens. Long trip for him. Marguerite took us to Tom’s Bowl on McIntire for ice cream & sandwiches. Took her back to Nursing Home about 6:30. Still wants me to come for all night.

Slept until 10:30 – Too tired last night to go to sleep.

Type status report on various MCHS projects for Dick Bryson & news release about meeting next Monday.

In town about 4 with news release & to sign check for MCHS at Irma Campbells. Up to see Mother. Mary had called saying Marion Manor has place for her next Tuesday. She wasn’t sure where Marion Manor is. She keeps asking how my boys are. I tell her I only have one boy – But she can’t remember who Davey is. Or even remember who Kathi is.

Joan Van Oosten called to tell me Carroll Neidhart incorporated the name “Old Village Marion” on August 15!!

Called Wayne Harper & he will fix ceiling & install light fixtures & front door we bought from Carroll for $100.

Margaret Cottrell called & her group will fix draperies & blinds for windows.

Caterers here at 5:00 – He dumped stuff & left 2 girls to serve. He forgot the dessert! – so we didn’t have any. 42 here & just got eating over & started to rain. Living room crowded for the meeting. Big plans for popcorn festival.

Moved Ray’s poems into 5 notebooks instead of 10. Nice to have office in bedroom – can start right in working on things. Breakfast on deck. Howard & I mowed upper lawn – I trimmed mowed. Fertilized all flowers except marigolds. They are too exuberant now.

Took Howard to see DeKalb’s experimental corn fields growing on what used to be his grandfather James Howser farm. Talked to DeKalb grower. He said the chose it as being best soil in Marion Co.

Dave played with B. J. Murphy & finished hauling piled up lumber from shack to across the road. Floor & roof still to be dismantled.

Sorted out 3 boxes of things I had piled up & got most of it filed. Wrote preliminary copy of MCHS newsletter but too tired at 1:00 AM to retype it.
