Worked on Valentine’s orders all day 1500 roses, 500 hearts, 1500 carnations, 150 bunches of poms, 500 daisies, 250 plants. All wholesalers say prices up. Short supply. Energy shortage. Keith Brashear in will soon have doctorate. He’s teaching at Findlay College and florist shop in Lima. Nelson Basil in. He’s designing sets and shows for public TV.
To WMRN at 10:15 and met Carroll Neidhart and we were on “Orbit” with Roger Fisher talking about “Marion 1976” film- got answers to several facts we wanted to use in film. Forgot Criswell’s wedding appointment and they were waiting when I got to the shop.
To Altrusa dinner meeting. Sat across from new member Judy Armstrong- Julie Armstrong’s mother – Kristi’s best friend.

Monday January 24th 1977 temperature 28th Hai 20 low
David got breakfast of bacon and pancakes. Then he and I went to shop for board meeting. Welcomed Kass [Mattimore] as secretary and her comments very helpful. Decided to charge $0.50 delivery charge talk to John Kagan and he’s against it. But Dave be he will be charging it within a year. Payroll $2,500 without my thousand dollars only three and a half hours overtime.
To Minnie Starner’s funeral. Deposited $50 for Christie’s birthday. Out home to pick up three azaleas. Had three $15 order for them.
Philippines tour info in the mail. Only 10 signed to go!
Kathi called. They will leave Oklahoma City tomorrow afternoon.
Carol Neidhart called and asked me to be on Orbit program tomorrow about Marion 1976 film.

Temperature 25 Heatwave!
Cleaned house and changed bed. In at 12 to call at funeral home for Mrs. Starner. Rosina there and looking plucky. Bernard Brooks worried about her. Cheryl and family- Laura and Matt out for sledding. Snow like powder about 15 in deep. I shoveled off pond so fish can see. Fed them sloppy joes cake and carrots and celery. (Knapps, not fish!) They all just left when Karen, David and Sarah came from rehearsal of Mark Milner Band. Worked on script for “Marion 1976” movie and watched the first night of “Roots”- story of a black family from Africa in 1752 to today.
Governor Rhodes call for homes to be set at 65° day in 55° night and business is the same.

Working on Mrs. Starner’s funeral work. Busy out front. To Trinity at 6 for wedding. Bride didn’t tell me to bring candles for theirl candelabra so had to go back for them. Getting a cold.

Lunch with Richard Straub. He’s trying to get me to go on a buying trip to Montgomery Alabama. Gave him Historic Society stuff from Tuesday. Then he came with samples for spring buying.
Unpacked Roseville Pottery shipment. Pat O’Hara in with December report. With inventory figures we finally have 40% cost of goods sold, which showed $16,000 profit for December- at end of November it was $42!
To mother’s about 6 and had soup with her. Told her I was going to the Philippines and she didn’t let on Barry had told her Monday. Took Carl’s historic Marion tape but she showed no interest. Minnie Starner died [Rosina Brooks mother]. Called Rosanna and she was in bed after chemotherapy today

Mother called me at 11 to remind me to watch inauguration on TV sure glad she did as it was very interesting. Liked Carter’s first words as president: “Thanks for all President Ford has done to heal our land.”
Sorted tapes, played some, as I watched Carter and Rosalynn walk from the capital to the White House.
Outdoors for pictures of snow about 15 in deep and all powder. Camera froze after about 10 minutes temperature 18 degrees today and house up to 65!

Up at 6:45 so I could be at Harding Freshman building to give vocational talk. About 50 attending.
Sam Feder- National Pottery salesman- bought about $500 novelty pottery.
Ruby Caveda in with one pound of Colombian coffee. Bought about $100. Dorcas Pottery in and bought $300. Finished unpacking CRJ shipment. Called Carl Granger to get copy of 552 North Greenwood sales records. Wrote up minutes of Historical Society meeting.
Barry had delivery to Caledonia and stopped to try to hook up extra TV but couldn’t get wire through floor.

Tuesday January 18th 1977
Historical Society meeting at shop. Henrietta Ringert resigned as secretary and I was appointed to fill her term. Will be easier than doing her work when she didn’t show. Gave poinsettias to several members. Mrs. Elmer Fiddler died yesterday. She is the one who wanted to give her house to the society, but her children were afraid she would need the money to keep her in nursing home. She was 97.
Rick’s Floor Covering in with estimate on dried design area. $339 for linoleum in Terrazzo design. Told them to go ahead. Will be next week.

Monday January 17th 1977 19 below zero
Schools closed so Tonya in a m. Called Stan Quickmire and told him I’d join Philippines tour. Had Cheryl repay me $1,500 that Hemmerly’s Flowers still owes me and have the other $475 in my checking account. Bought wool-lined red plaid Pendleton slacks at Axthelm’sl $32 and got Philippines books at library. Supper at Rhoads Restaurant and took copy of tour to Mary & Rocky. Picked up Barry and to Jim Hill’s for Camera club meeting. Those guys are fun. Crazy comments on slides shown.

10 below zero and it didn’t get warmer than five below zero all day. Called off snow party but Tonya and friend came and went out for about 15 minutes but admitted it was too cold. Call David about Philippines if I went I’d be gone when “Ike” is born. Called Kathi and she says Philippines anti-American and everything get stolen. Called Stan Quickmire- tour leader in Connecticut- and still is opening. Told him I’d let him know tomorrow.
