Picked Mary up & headed for Ada & the Bazaar at the Methodist Church. Faye in charge of apron booth & the Zimmermans gave me a smock for my birthday. Bought noodles, candy, and Texas Star design fastened to wicker plate. Gail treated us to dinner & showed us the church windows – stained – beautiful 1900 church seats 1,000 people. Stopped to see mother as we came back. She ignored the flowers I had sent. Home & at 4:30 Jordan’s & Deckers [sic – she meant Heckers] picked Dave & me up to go to Bucyrus for dinner at The Brown Derby. Had steak-

Both Kathy & David called to wish me a happy birthday.

Birthday cards from Edith Keeler, Vivian Bratten, R. J. Claprood (Floyd), Doris & Stu Gibson, Dve (he made it), Kathi & Kris, Cheryl, Nell, Kass.

When I got home from Ada a lovely fall arrangement had been delivered from Kathi & David & families. David & Kathi also gave me a paper cutter.

With Dave in to see Mother about 12:00. Then on to Olentangy Indian Caverns S. of Delaware. They opened about 1934 and have never been there. Actually used by Indians – found many arrowheads when they opened the cave. On to O’Shaughnessy Dam & Dave climbed the rocks I climbed in the 30’s. To Delaware & had dinner at Bun’s – with hot fudge sundaes for dessert. Stopped at Delaware Dam on way home. Water at 516 ft. I wonder how high it is when it floods.
Watched “Dracula” on TV.

Howard rode fence row with me and picked up a peck of hickory nuts.

Picked Marguerite Stokely up at 9:00 & down to Stokely homestead. Helped her look for innersoles, purse & false face. Only found the purse. Showed up the flail & a yoke with D.S. – 1797 carved in – used to carry 2 buckets of water. Also went to cellar & saw outside door used by escaping slaves in Lydia Stokely’s day. Took Mary to cemetery – should have taken snips to clean it out. Took Marguerite in to Roseville to “Maggies” for lunch. Mary Ungemach & Peggy – pottery gals there * so glad to see Marguerite. Back to Zanesville to see Norris Schneider – librarian of Times Recorder & local historian. Told me of a copy of “Y-Bridge City” in NY & he told me best place to place Hildreth Genealogy would be the Muskingum Co. Genealogy Society Library at Ohio University – Zanesville Campus. So dropped it off there. Started home at 4:00 & Ken & Dave just pulling out as we arrived at 6:01. All in to see Mother (in bed) & supper at Wendy’s.

Mary out at 7:30. In Zanesville by 9:45 Tried to call David Maddox – out of office. On to Marietta – Lunch at Betsy Mills – To Marietta College Library & found archives only open on Wednesday except by appointment – wanted to see if any more info on Benoni Hurlbut. Drove down to Belpre & over to Parkersburg. Roy Swick not in but could see Blennerhasset Island – but ferry not running. Back to Belpre – found Stone’s Ft. marker but not “Farmer’s Castle”. Good view of Island. Stopped at cemetery – no luck for Benoni’s grave – Library closed. Research at courthouse showed David Stokely’s donation tract was in Salem Twp with Bear Creek bisecting it. Drove there on Rd. 48 – E of Lowell. Only about 300’ bottomland – rest very hilly. Back to Zanesville via I-77 – Called Marguerite Maddox at Sunnyview Nursing home & went to see her to make arrangements for tomorrow. Staying at Quality Inn at Maple & Cedar $36 for 2 – with Sr. Citizen discount.

David Stokely sold the Bear Creek land in 1839 for $50. Wonder who lived on it and “bore arms” for him to hold it that long.
