Trella Hemmerly – 1979-11-03

Saturday November 3rd 1979 [64th birthday]
Everyone should have the Royal Treatment I had when they have a birthday. So good to feel loved as my friends made me feel. After the 11:30 Skok-Greenwood wedding the shop gang unveiled my cake “The Marion County 1979 History”. So cute I couldn’t bear to cut it before going to the “tasting tea” at the First Presbyterian Church as Erma Hutchman’s guest. 40 dishes on the menu and the cookbook containing all the recipes. Then went on a shopping spree and bought black shoes $28, a rust suede dress $38, a rust coat, zip-out lining $99 and 4 chains. On sale Monday so the clerk gave me the sale price of 2 for $5.55. Took mother some carnations and the cake book and left some for her and Roger. He sure is getting that place cleaned up. David called and he bought a Canon AE-1 with 1.4 lens and a 70-215 Vivitar Zoom. Jordans and Hecker’s picked me up at 5 to go to the Pioneer Mill Restaurant in Tiffin for dinner. Carl got stopped for speeding in Sycamore but nice cop didn’t ticket him. Delicious dinner with a birthday cake for me. Home about 9 watched “McArthur” on TV and I’m still stuffed.
Shop people gave me a Krementz rose stick pin, Mary & Kenny, Allen Eckert’s “Wilderness War”, Mary & Carl popcorn and pecans.

Saturday October 27th 1979
Stopped at shop for a table before going to Fairgrounds at 8:30 and found that Mr Risch was found dead this morning by his son Delmar. He called Lillian at 8:20 at work. Lillian composed and stayed at shop until about 10 and then went out to home. Delmar was in the cornfield as his dad would have wanted. He was 94 and had been on the tractor harvesting this week.
To the fairgrounds where the Crock family from Upper Sandusky had the fire going and people cutting up peeled apples and cider boiling into copper kettles. Took pictures and brought coffee from mothers and then back to shop. Very busy with mother-in-law’s day and Harding homecoming and getting complaints sorted out. Back to Fairgrounds at 4:30 and helped sell the 61 quarts of apple butter that they made. Sold qts. at $3.75 & Pints at $2. I donated 14 glass lidded jars, 5 lb of sugar and bought one and a half quarts and a gallon cider. Gates’ had Country Store stuff. We gave the Crocks and Bessie Wendling- who made Buffalo stew- sunbonnets from store. Kenny Hemmerly called then we made arrangements for Merlin to bring Roger* to mother’s tomorrow.

[*Roger Hemmerly, Kenny’s half-brother]

Lillian took her dad, William Risch to doctor. He has an aneurysm on his aorta that could rupture at any time. Gave him a 50-50 chance to come through an operation and six months perhaps without it.
Up to Mother’s. Took her “Little House in the Big Woods” but she only wants to recount her “burglary”. Told her that Mary Kay Mills said Shields (her next-door neighbor that mistreat their dogs) have only paid $180 in rent during the five years they have lived there! And Shields was campaign manager for Ayres Ratliff for mayor!!
Shopped at T&A and had pork chops for supper. TV and Boggle and bed at 12.
