House cleaning – Wally went to Columbus to Bank meeting & Ray was to pick me up at 7 to got to their house. But when he called at 4:30 I could see I wasn’t going to get through – cleaning bookcases – washing woodwork & painting baseboard so told him couldn’t come.

Still working at 7 when Ray would have been coming up after me. Got the kids to bed & stoppped work about 9 & got cleaned up a little. Had hopes but as usual came to nothing. Wally had got to Romines about 8:45 & stayed until 11:00 to spite me for not coming. I got roasted and-how for “spoiling” his evening. No credit at all for the work I did – and which if I’d had help on I could have gone too. Tried to go to sleep but got up & cleaned paper. Wally twisted my arm & it bothers me.

Tuesday, May 20, 1947 Temp 60 Sunny
Left Marion at 8:45 with Daddy & David. At Webb’s in Toledo at 11. Picked up Katherine at Museum and then to Ottawa Park to eat lunch. In Ash [tree] over our table were 7 blackburnian warblers who entertained us during lunch of bacon & eggs. Saw planted wild flower garden. It had possibilities but not developed.

Then finally to the openings. First stop only yielded arrow leaf violet & sessile bellewort in bloom, but lupine – yellow pocoon & yellow lady slippers not out. Knocked down what I think is brinthis balonna for Ray. Next stop only a white cluster at top of stalk – 6 in. high. Next one pale lavender spurred violet – starred smilacina – iris galore – & then near Oak Openings Park along railroad Lupines & yellow pocoon in bloom – & bird’s foot violets – also blue racer. Still another violet in another place. Then back to Webb’s for a quick supper & 2 hrs. home.

Home at 8:45 – David was an angel – Played in the “sand piles” & fascinated everyone. Called Ray & told him about trip – Wally in for minute from “School Working Girls” banquet & then to play poker. Worked on records of day’s finds.

Monday, May 19, 1947 Temp 60 rain
Washed but it rained before they all got dry. But Ray & Flo & Wally & I went to Scout Camp anyway to see if we could scare up the butterfly we saw yesterday. No luck but Ray found 2 morels & a field (?) sparrow’s nest.

To planning meeting of Camp Licensing Course. 3 from Galion – one knew Hazel Chase – neighbor.

While I was gone Wally took up the green carpeting – cut off the best end & cleaned the wallpaper in west end. I fried the morels when I got home.

Called Daddy to see if he would go to Toledo with me tomorrow. Said he would so aI baked batch of cookies. To bed after 12:00.

Moved most of plants from window seats outdoors – to terrain north of Sunroom. Helped daddy plant seed – 10 rows of zinnias – 6 kinds & cabbage & Kohl rabbi [sic} Then he hauld in sand for salpigtossis. One row of tulips – planted last year – has over 1,000 buds & blooms. Way too thick of course.

Mary home on train.

Had first strawberry short cake. Kathy haws finally learned to relish it. No new breaking out on her & the spots are scabbous.

Worked in yard after supper. Planted creeping zinnia & canary bird flower east of Mary’s porch & cupid zinnias on front ot terrace.

Ray called – Had idea I was mad because of Wed. night. I told him I was just hurt.

Field Day for Scouts called off for tomorrow. But Grace S. didn’t call to tell me – was supposed to take some of her Scouts.

Washed & set my hair. Did a washing – finished painting bedroom – second coat that is. Worked on talk for tonight. Am using 15 pressed specimens as a test & then will base talk on them.

Wally took David to het his hair cut. Tulips are in full bloom. “Perfecta” a red, yellow & green lacinated parrot burst open today & it is gorgeous. Made me a corsage of it to wear on aqua suit to talk.

Ate supper at mother’s. Just didn’t see how I could get that in too.

Then to garden to se out tomatoe plants. Put 100 under hot caps. Some of them are over a foot high. Daddy & Walt finished putting out total of 250.

Mrs. Eicher & Mrs. Schlintz picked me up for Sun & Shade Garden Club meeting at Bernie Petrich (Mrs. Peterson’s daughter). Talk went very well – had lots of questions. Home at 11:30.

Lava M. called at 9 asking if this was Francis L. Franklin. I agreed & she said she had been quite interested in the article.

Started cleaning with a vengeance. Gave bathroom door another coat of paing & started on bedroom. Don’t know how that small closet contained all those clothes. Peted [sic?] the bed high. But got first coat on bath doo & one window.

Wally shopped for groceries for me so I could get through. But he spent $12 of the $15 I get from him every 2 weeks.

Rushed supper & bath to met Ray & Flo for “Sea of Grass” Very engrossing – & tear jerking.

Then to Romines for coffee & cookies. Ray said they are not going Tuesday because Flo is fed up with watching my kids. Also put oon about the address being on FLF article (in case he ever geets around to wrting one someone might connect him with me) Flo also went into her routinge about how awful I looked in the jodphurs I bought. Wally tried to stick up for me & made it worse.

Rain again but still warm.
Washed down bathroom & got door ready to paint. Wally did that while I took proofs of Burroughs Program book from Bernard to Hazel Strubel & Alice Caulfield. Looks good with minor changes.

Home for supper then the four of us KDW&I took ride to cemetery. Beds of double tulips in bloom are a sight to behold. Magnolias in full flower – redbud out. Really lovely. Only birds of note were redstart.

Kathy is pretty well broken out today but still not sick enought to stay in bed. And only a little fussy.

When I scolded David for chewing a hole in his sweater his only reply was “Mommy fix it.”

Worked on herbarium all evening & got it pretty well caught up.

Article on spring beauties in the Star tonight.
