Schuck Ranch
Over to Grove to pick a grapefruit for breakfast. Lazed on Patio in sun smelling petunias & stock. With Jackye to pick up mail & cleaning. Then up past original Wickenburg “Dude Ranch” along Hassayampa & up dirt road to top of mt for view in all directions. Shpped at Safeway & I got Jaicama (Hi comma) here had eaten it but all liked it. Did my washing & hung out in sun to dry. To Wilda’s for dinner & nice visit with Bill. He got a kick out of Kenny charging me for 2 boards when he cut one too short.

Kass called for permission to place Easter order. Eveything OK. Also talked to Cheryl.

Jackye had pancakes & sausage for David & family & then we all p[iled in the Suburban & drove out Vulture Mine Rd to the mine, but didn’t take tour. Went on toward Aquila stopping to look for Apache Tears – no luck. On up to the Joshua Tree area & got picture of Josh sitting in one & picked up dead cholla (our usual collecting site) Had tailgate picni. The Haldeman’s left for Walt’s at 5. I had a 1 1/2 lb hamburger with the boys & retired to my waterbed early after bath & hair wash in the tiled 4×4 tub.

Santa Ana to Schuck Ranch 12 to 8:15 – 344 miles
Allen picked avacados for us with long handled picker.
Left Allen’s at 11 their time – David & family enjoyed the heated pool at their motel before checking out. The Vagabond on First St. is the place to stay.

Santa Ana Fwy to 57 to I-91 to US 60 to I-10 to US 60. Stopped at Hadley for $54 worth of fruit & in Palm Springs at Casuelos for excellent Chimichangas, casadillos & burritos. Temp in Indio among the Date Palm Groves was 84 at 3:25. Gas at Blythe at 6:00 & saw the alfalfa fields where the truck loads headed west had grown. Arizona line at 6:15 & immediately saw saquero’s – Mountains turned “heather” & we sang “Oh Beautiful for Spacious Skies.” Sunset along I-10 with Mts. silhouetted against pink sky. Jupiter & Saturn in conjunction looked like airplane lights in the sky. At Ranch at 8:15 following my directions. Warm welcome – but bunk house plumbing out so David’s to Wickenburg motel.

Somehow Barry & Feeney managed to pull it all together today. Case study of the rose grower seemed insoluable. Good corporate procedures detailed. David & I had lunch at end of Fisherman’s Wharf. Clam chowder delicious. Historic area interesting around wharf. He left at 3 for Alameda & Josh’s birthday party. Kathi, Bob & I wandered through Monterey Pines at Pacfic Grove looking for Monarch butterflies but found only a dead one. Back to Cannery Row for a dqquiri at “Floras” (former bordello) & dinner at Spaghetti Warehouse with Silent Movies.

Monday, March 9, 1981 Sunny Temp 65
At Doubletree about 7:30 AM – Juice, coffee & rolls before Dave Barry & Gerry Feeny opened seminar on The Future of the Family Owned Business. Each participant gave their profile. I am only one ready to retire. Some others much more complicated. Case study pointed out things not to do & how better to solve problems. Out at 4:30 – Picked up Bob & headed for 17 mile drive – got to beach just at sunset. Too dark for pix of lone cypress. Could see light from Big Sur Lighthouse. Stopped in Carmel – Pizza at “A Pizza House”. Walked the dark-tree bordered streets – into some shops – window full of exclusive merchandise. David bought book on houses for sale $500,000 up.
Bed at 10:00.
