1 inch rain
Worked getting all the little jobs done that got the house in pretty good shape by the time Dave Decker arrived at 6:00. Found out later how he managed to spend this time with me. Missed the kickoff meeting in Austin Texas for his new Navy air project. Crucial that he gets things set up for his successor when he returns in June. Hated to leave Johanna to take care of stray cat he rescued that is partially paralyzed. I feel so honored that he cares enough for me to keep his promise to be here for my birthday.
He will retire in June. 23 years in navy. Retirement $50,000 a year. Quite a drop from his present $120,000 a year salary. He’ll move to Albuquerque New Mexico for study for PhD in geology and a new career. he is 42 on December 19th.

Mark Baker, my 8th grade science teacher at Central Junior High School spiked a lifelong interest in nature when he assigned us to make a leaf collection.
So on this gorgeous October afternoon with the trees aflame incolors from raspberry to lemon I rode around Terradise in my golf cart and over 70 years later made another leaf collection.
In that 70 year time span my interest in nature has broadened to include birds, butterflies and gardening. But it was especially rewarding to be collecting leaves once more.
On my side porch the wind had deposited tulip poplar and sycamore from trees far from there. So using a small catalog for preserving inserted them and headed down toward the river and into the woods and added Shagbark hickory, red osier dogwood, Hopa crab, bald cypress, American and European beach, silver and black and Norway maple, and shingle oak. The ginkgo had dropped a few yellow leaves that look like little fans. The Buckeye leaves were all on the ground and fading as were the compound Ash leaves. A few Hawthorn leaves clung to their twigs but I couldn’t find the leaves from the yellowwood tree. Used all my energy collecting so pressings labeling will have to wait.
My article on MCHS antique appraisal in Star.

Sat with Helen Kaufman and Dorothy Young. Gale and Dan joined us. Talked to John and Jan peacock and he will take me to Ohio Historical Society to see Ray Romine lepidoptera collection.

And as I was leaving Faith Evanovski’s husband stopped me to say hello. Shopped at Meijer after depositing $1,000 check from 229 account in my checking.

Royce cleaned I did three loads of laundry. Washed banisters on side porch and cleaned the bird bath fountain.
Karen Kelly here at 3:45 to pick up my book on Copper Canyon in Mexico that Dave and Johanna gave me in 2001. Showed her the Marion Star front page photo of first work on Rails to Trails west of Marion. Also the Terradise Nature Preserve Endowment Fund original documents allowing only 5% withdrawal of corpus. But now managed by Marion Community Foundation. Exchanged other stories and she said they fish in ponds verifying my sightings in the spring in mine.
We both drove to Terradise Nature Preserve to see if gravel had been delivered to use on low spots on path and better access from shelter house. They hadn’t! She will ask Dick and Mary to put additional stakes on Terradise signs to stabilize them.
