Monday, August 23, 1954

Erma Hutchman in at 7:30 to relieve me. Ray had enema while I was home & Kapcar helped him break intestinal block. Back at 11:30 to feed him. Ate soup & Jello & ice cream in afternoon. Paris in at 4:30. Sandra from 7 to 8 with Paris. Mary took him milkshake at 9 & stayed till 12 when I went back. He was irrational at times.

To hospital from 8 to 10 – Paris had come in early. Then made glamellias* to finish the 3 weddings for 2:30. Back to hospital at 3:00. Napped from 11 to 1 then back for night. Wears Ray out to cough. Oxygen off & on. All personel so nice.
[*A Glamelia bouquet is essentially a bouquet made by stripping down a single type of flower (Orchids, Lilies, Gladiolas etc), stripping it down to the pedals and then wiring them back together to recreate a single large bloom.]

I stayed all night at hospital. Home in morning for nap. Mary Jordan & Mary Rockwell worked from 1 a.m. on weddings. I helped in evening. Ray much improved but can’t talk above a whisper & eats (drinks) constantly. Paris standing by marvelously. Came home abt 11 & left Ray alone.

Ray asked me to leave room while he used commode & when I came hack in he was stretched out on bed not breathing. Finally gasped. Ralph Boger came over. Got Axe’s out & took him to hospital. Oxygen- shots for blood pressure. Kapcar took over. Took gallon of fluid from right lung in evening.

Couldn’t get woke up this morning. Folks took kids to Lake. Paris & Dad Romine out about boon. Dad gave Ray check for #350 as 1/2 of what he had given to Paris once when he needed it. Paris & Sandra out in evening. I planted perennial seeds in greenhouse. Ray afraid he can’t make it to commode bench.

Helen Wood Dalbert & Mrs. Wood out. Brought Ray grape juice & pears. Thrilled with house. Ray only able to say hello under his breath. Kids went in to Mother’s*.

Erma & Bill Hutchman had a hospital bed sent out for Ray. Put his springs & mattress & Sandra bedstead in Kathy’s room. Mary & Rocky came out & installed electric buzzer from Ray’s bed to kitchen. Bernard & Rosina Brooks here. John Gill called from Detroit.

Ray brighter – eating eggnogg, rootbeer (145/24) with milk, clear soup, tea & I read “Flying Saucers Have Landed”! Sandy, Paris & Dad out with 6 copies of Star with article about Ray’s cartoons. Worked in iris & set out Jap iris seedlings. David played with Buddy Kline.

Gave Ray bath before I went in to do 2 weddings. Sandra out to stay with him. Dutch & Jean Fail over in evening. Also Paris, Helen, MargaretAnne & Dad.
