Monday, May 11, 1987
Bob Haldeman died in Delaware. David and Kathy’s great uncle- just my age.
Wrote letters to C. Hughes- thanks for $1,000 for MCHS from Charles Barnhart estate, Huber application for Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame and started a letter to Steve White but ran out of time.
To Mary’s and then to Fairgrounds- met Stan Winck who had Huber’s revolving hay rake out to photograph. Then to his barn in Big Island to photograph a 1914 gas engine tractor.
Supper with Fannie and Floy Baker- chicken salad and strawberry shortcakes. To the Fouts west of Forest for meeting of Searchlight Club. I spoke on wildflowers and showed slides. Mr. Fout has collection of Indian artifacts and books on them- knows his stuff. Mr Fout collects salt cellars- 1,800 of them! Also great gardeners. Stayed all night with [Floy] Bakers.

Sunday, May 10, 1987
Slept late and Dave slept later, 12:00 noon. He got in at 7:30 from prom. Mary out and we had a quick lunch of macaroni and cheese and talked about Dave’s budget. Hadn’t had one. Gave him benefit of our experience. He fixed my TV antenna so I can get Channel 10 some. Left at 1:30.
Watered plants and set out some more. So dry, no rain for weeks.
Mary and I went to Stafford’s Woods in Morrow County. found about 100 plants of Showy Orchis but only in one spot. Also checked on Pawpaw blooms across river- plenty!

Saturday, May 9, 1987
David into work about 6:30 to do the routing I didn’t do last night. Dave came in from Great Lakes about 2:00 and slept on sofa. I into work before 8:00 and with the things brought from Quarry Street Refrigerator Storage just dumped any place it was chaos but got it sorted and things went smoothly.
Cash register sales around $7,000. 400 deliveries. Had to wait about until about 7:30 for David’s wagon to come back so I can come home. He went Bellevue in Strongsville in my car about 8:30 and then to Cincinnati. Needed his wagon to deliver in. Dave and Oleta stopped by- Dave in white uniform and Oleta in pink satin with peplum and embroidered pearls and sequins.

Friday, May 8, 1987
David in to work all day while I set out plants and got letters written.
Call from Norm Glanz asking if Marion County Historical Society had paid Steve White. I assured him we had and that Steve told us he was floating his check that he had given Glanz in payment and that he hadn’t made a cent- charged us just what he had been charged- all lies!
In to Prescott, Ball and Tubin to take signed papers to redeem stock. Paid $25,000 and I’ll get about $31,000 after 2 years. To Fields on Normandy to see why they hadn’t paid $5,000 on principal that was due June 1st- gave them until Tuesday. Working routing but David called- “Come home, have to enjoy Terradise.

Thursday, May 7, 1987 David and I met Bob and Sue Harter- became lifelong friends.

Up at 7:00- breakfast with David and he went to Columbus for last day of Funeral Directors Convention. I dressed in pioneer dress and Grandma Sheneman’s plush cape and taking wooden churn and ship and covered wagon models and rag rug started for Waldo school and Pioneer days. Ruth Oppenheimer really staged a great show- dancers, magicians, Harry Bard’s miniature horses, Carroll Neidhart as Schoolmaster, candlemaker Bob Hartley that grows Prairie plants, spinner, quilters, country store. I told story of families trip from Germany.
Stopped at Betty Black’s to pick up dresses, etc. from Helen Atchinson’s estate. To Hughes-Kuback Funeral Home to call on Mary Williams Brant. To courthouse for Huber committee supper with Mary. Routed about 150 orders- 4 routes. Home at 11:00.

Wednesday, May 6, 1987
David and I worked on computer and took a bird walk in the woods. Watched female wood duck devour an egg while male watched on pond.
To Columbus at 11:00 took David to Ohio Funeral Directors Convention and I drove to Ohio Historical Society to interview Tom Kuhn and Bill Bursa for job in Local History Office. Bill got our votes- he’s from Cleveland and his wife would stay there. To Arvey’s for paper supplies. David up and went to MicroCenter- largest computer store in the world. Bought dsdd* discs for $0.29 by the hundred. Watched demonstration of desktop publishing. Home about 9:00. passed marsh at Delaware Dam.

From last Sunday to today the trees have leafed out lilacs and viburnums are blooming. There was no chorus of bird song at daybreak that I remember from May mornings 20 years ago. Do we have Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring?

A rainy dripping day temperature about 50. Relaxed A.M. Read the Star and News Life preliminary interviews of mayoral candidates- I can’t vote for city offices but which would I choose? Dr Robert S Brown or Jerry Ballinger. Dr Mike Brown’s opponent doesn’t have a chance.

May 2, 1987 OAHSM Regional meeting Roscoe Village

With Mary to Coshocton for Region 5 meeting. Ffirst one Pat Cummins has attended- don’t know why Bill Nolan asked her to preside- after all she’s second vice president and I’m first vice president. Told Don Beckett- nominating committee- that I would accept presidency of OAHSM for next 2 years. Local History Office did not have evaluation forms or awards information available. Good talk on Ohio canals by Glick. Tour of Roscoe Village after meeting. Dogwoods gorgeous there and in Mount Vernon. Resumes of Tom Cooper and William Busta in mail for me to study before interviews next Wednesday at Ohio Historical Society for local history office job.
