Every morning Howard shovels one of bags of the sand from the sandbagging. Puts it in the wheelbarrow and then I distribute it on the terrible jackwax [soil] on the terraces. Worked in garden until 11:00- another shot of Roundup on weeds and walks that didn’t show signs of dying.
Expected David but he called from Cincinnati about 7:00 and said he wasn’t coming up for the installation of the new computer system at the shop. Had an impression Kass discouraged it.

Slept until 10:00- cooled down to 65 last night and humidity down. Fertilized lawn. Howard dug up weedy flower bed by garage and I set out more snapdragon plants. Weeded day lilies on front bank. Male Kathi’s birthday card with $50 birthday check and $250 of the Kemper dividends. Mary picked up $4 pizza Dugout Pizza- almost too cold to eat on deck!

Everyone listening to Oliver North testify – Came across as a “can-do” man. (Supplied arms to contras in Nicaragua) “We love you but don’t quite trust you.”

Call from Jack Bray saying I had $742 more coming from option income for Kemper Fund (dividends).

Another hot muggy day. Dug up beds along patio and set out flats of snapdragons, coral impatiens and yellow marigolds. Completely worn out, but I kept thinking about how Kristi has to push herself to keep up at the [Air Force] Academy. Showered, rested and met Mary at 4:30 at Perkins. Picked up two bags of Peat Moss at Meijer’s on sale at $4.99 for 40 lb bale.

Watched Newhart, Valerie, and Facts of Life – Down Under. Severe thunderstorm warnings canceled at 8:30.

90 humidity 85%
To McKinley Park at 11:00. Carroll Neidhart had art show well set up including the 12 posters on Northwest Ordinance and U.S. Constitution. But rained from 11:30 to 12:00 so decided to have dancers in Erickson Pavilion. Eddie Guiliford took over as the MC for the informal program and introduced me. The chairs set up in the sun- a mistake as I told Roy Switzer when we first went to see the park. About 300 seated for formal program Jerry Ballinger as Nathan Peters and Eber Baker by Charton Myers were great. Charles Mosher had books* for sale and John Cottrell paid the bills. We took the last carriage ride and then to eat at Isaly’s. John Margaret Cottrell and I.
