Sunday, May 1, 1988 Open Garden
70° sunny
Mowed lawn in am and Mary came out at noon to help me greet guests. She stayed in lower deck with book to sign and a few Terradise brochures to distribute. John Watkins and Jerry Ballinger two Commissioners among about 300 who visited. John has made overture toward getting Scenic River designation for the Whetstone and will use brochures as fodder.
Bob and Sue Harter came with their daughter-in-law and grandson. I was too tired to go to Prairie with them.

To Milan for Region 2 meeting. Doris and John Hickson only other Marion County Historical Society. Great meeting- about 75 there. Lunch at Milan Inn and development director of Toledo Museum of Art told them trustees should be the first to contribute to their fundraisers and volunteering doesn’t absolve you from giving money. I agree heartily but some there didn’t. Toured the Thomas Edison birthplace and met his grand nephew and wife. Cultured and unassuming. Finale was reception at home of President of Milan Historical Museum Association. Charming and toads were singing in his little pond in lovely garden.

In at 1:00 for duty at Marion Historical Center. Mr Wynn of Sharp Copier in to see if we had made decision. Told him no word from Jay Hickson. Then said old Sharp not worth the $500 needed to fix- obsolete parts.
Supper with Mary. David went to Cincinnati after Funeral Directors convention in Columbus. Message on my answering machine so I had to call Ruth Moser as she wanted him to reprogram her WordStar. Called Dave to tell him I’ll order his checks.

Howard with me to back of acres to get five buckets woods dirt for beds along patio. Planted seed snaps, alyssum, marigold, cosmos, annual phlox.
Olive Ashworth brought Edith Keeler (age 90) out and I drove Olives car down in woods so Edith could see things and got it stuck. Took my car down to rescue Edith and Olive and drove it back to Marion. Missed post office committee meeting at 4:00. Went down to find Karl Nickle and was using his backhoe to get me some topsoil and he had it stuck by river! Another man got it out for him. Karl brought me a load of dirt, went down in woods pulled Olive’s car out of mud and I drove it up, cleaned it and took it into her after I went to auction of Murphy’s house at 6:30. One bid of $27,200 not acceptable to Farm Credit so not sold.

In at 9:00 to East Lawn Manor to represent Bicentennial Committee for DAR’s Arbor Day planting of 2 ashes that I went to Columbus to get Thursday. Told them about 1827 when East Lawn Manor County Home was the Gruber Farm. One tree left of that era and we plant for the next 160 years.
Took minutes, etc. of class of ‘33 to Ray Hinklin. Later he brought Carl Sanborn out and they with help of my station wagon pulled the wooden bridge back over the rill. Very dry in woods.

Left cabin with regrets at missing Sunday program of healing herbs and landscaping with wildflowers and edible plants. But wabted to see Francis so went to Nashville. Arrived at Cracker Barrel restaurant at 9:00. Harry and Robbie brought Francis. Hard to talk with restaurant noise. Francis to church and Robbie took us across street to Opryland Hotel to see conservatory and cascades. Hotel room open on both sides with balconies. Could be in Hawaii, so well done. Left at noon. Stopped at David’s at 5:00 for a half hour. Home by 8:30.

He took us to dinner in Lebanon and then we all went to lecture on owls. Petted 4 kinds and then to woods where Ray Cope called up at least four with screech owl and barred ol calls broadcast.
