Paris & I walked in cemetery all morning. Mary, Sandy with us at hospital when Axthelm & Kapcar came in with the devastating news. With Ray all night.

Anesthesia- sodium penatol- for Xrays. Dye injected into aorta through back. Dr. Kapcar gave Trella a resume of case to date. Kidney is displaced upward & outward with a tumor or cyst. Trella, Sandy, Mary & Rocky in. Paris couple of times. Big rain – hailed in greenhouse. Cooler.

Wednesday, April 21, 1954

Nights are the worst. Can’t sleep for noise. Had examination thru penis. Local anesthesia. Everyone says Dr. Kapcar is the best. He made examination. Will operate Saturday. Trella & dad in afternoon. Then Trella took Dad to cemetery. Took pictures (Wedding appointment at 7:00 – then back to hospital. Hot Temp 84.

Trees are in full bloom. Magnolias, Pears, Cherry, Daffs at height – early tulips starting. To hospital in morning then to shop to make 23 corsagettes. Back to Hospital in aftenoon. 2 wedding appointments in evening. Ray about as usual today. Hot.

Beautiful weather. Have about decided it is a tumor on the kidney. Dr. Axthelm has called in Dr. Kapcar, urologist. More Xrays. I stopped at Edith Keeler’s for red bud. David & I drove around & planted them across river. Trout lilies, dentaria, spring beauties, Dutchman’s Britches.

Easter
I went to shop until about 12 & then went down & got Ray & brought him home for awhile. We walked around to see daffodils, etc. Little cool. Hazel & Kelse stopped for a minute. Back to hospital at 6. I came home & read all evening. Exhausted.
