MCHS 1
Mary H. & Helen Romine out about 4 for roast port & sauerkraut. Spent most of day getting house in shape & cooking. Helen brought carrot-pineapple-raisin salad to add to my Waldorf Salad & mashed potatoes. Had Kathi’s date nut bread for dessert.
Kathi called about 10:30 AM – She’s pooling her C’mas money from me with Bob’s to get him a heavy duty drill.
Call from Ed Lux about 5 Mute Swans on swale between SR 309 & Williamsport Rd near Messengers. So just before sunset we headed out to find them.
Looked at them from both roads & their bills looked black to us – making them Tundra Swans.
Nice visit with Mary & Helen until after 9 – Told them about Kent’s call-
Eula Rhoads called & talked for an hour – mostly rehash, but told her I was trying to reconstruct a Transformation Fund Spreadsheet that made more sense than Telfers. Will send her a copy. Read her Caroll Neidhart’s letter about Telfer but didn’t say who wrote it.

Did a Terradise Christmas Bird Count from my windows – 13 species – about 75 birds – Also during count period – blue jay, great blue heron, Carolina wren.
Had to keep reminding myself that we had already had a wonderful “Christmas Day” – so enjoyed my leisure & at the TV dinner left over from Thanksgiving.
Read “Fumble Rules” that Mary gave me – Safire should be teaching grammar in every school in the land. Finally got through to me on banishing passive voice. (Put the subject, not the object, first)

Mary out about 1:00 – Haldemans arrived about 2:00 – Had a light lunch of beef barbeque & Waldorf Salad.
Carol Sing guests at 4:00 – So many had family dinners today but Willis & Wanda Nye here along with most of Mary Jordan’s family. But not Mary or Marilee – David played piano & sang Oh Holy Night beautifully – usual spread added to my veggie tray & spiced cider. Left about 6:30 & then we had Christmas. Mary got me a book making fun of our most common grammar errors, 2 plug in flashlights, a peach sweater & silver chain. David gave me book on Ohio’s Natural Wonders & The Man Who Planted Trees. I gave everyone their usual $50 or $100 plus gifts.
Started snowing during carol sing.
