Worked on Forum membership list until 5:30 a.m. and slept until 10:30 when Mame Harmon woke me saying she would send her check for $160 to Steven Drown. “Tired of all the nitpicking Garden Forum members.” Told her of the letter and ballot I was sending to all members and to hold her check until the vote was in.

Dave to ACT test. Called me from Mary’s about 1:00- invited to a party at Chris’s cousin’s on Fairground Street tonight and wanted to stay in town. Told him to come home and work. He’s cleaned station wagon and my car but refused to help me clean garage and left without telling me he was going. Now 12:30 and he’s not home.

Reading Anya Seton’s “Devil Water” again.

Norm Fogt out to dig white lilacs to plant at Quarry Street cemetery. Also gave him Iris and peonies. Mary called saying Jessie and Loren there and they would bring sandwich meat out for lunch. Loren at Community Medical Center for blood sugar test and doctor appointment. nice visit. Garden all day. Tried water in pool again after cementing but it’s still leaking. Set out more impatiens and the marigolds west of greenhouse- tired of waiting to get greenhouse.

Dave had dental appointment at 10:30- three more cavities filled. Worked at Mary’s and goofed off at Chris’s. Val Flavel called after talking to Ken Chaney who had called this morning about speaker to dedicate Spanish-American War monument. She says the Veteran’s Park Association did not ask Steve Drown to come up. Only called him and he didn’t return call so the visit was Mame’s idea.

Dave up at 5:30 and ready to leave for canoe trip on little Muskingum at 6:15. Battery dead on wagon- he played the radio full blast last night while he cleaned the car. Dick Cooper over and jumped it for him and they left at 6:45. I made two batches of freezer strawberry jam before breakfast on the deck to accompaniment of indigo bunting. Planted three rows popcorn and chopped weeds in garden across road. In to Veterans Park across from Harding Memorial to meet Steven Drown- landscape architect from OSU. Needed his plans to show them where to place Spanish-American War monument. To shop in Norma Ekleberry frantic because payroll program stalled. Talked to her around alternatives and she finally hit on using the backup and entering hours already figured. To Center- two sets visitors- Firstenburger girls, Katie Hill and Dorothy. Cleaned and trimmed shrubbery. Hickson’s there. To Mary’s to take tools to sharpen. dinner at “Sisters” with them. shopped at Meijer and got $50 from money machine at National City Bank.

Worked on Iris bed on front bank. Kathi called- sure be glad when Steven leaves. Dave home about 10:00 from canoe trip. Went right to bed.

Took news release on MAGS autograph party for the Midlams to News Life, Marion Star and Madge Guthery [WMRN]. Had a nice visit with her and toured her house to the third floor where Fred Guthery’s trunk is. She is willing it to the Marion County Historical Society! Didn’t seem to have much in it except 1864 book on Battle of Gettysburg.

Mayme Harmon called about 9:30. Steven Droure, Landscape Architects will be at Veterans Park tomorrow at 10:30. Be there!

Six “WorkFare” men (on welfare) out with Sandy Lucas of East Lawn Manor to dig trees for East Lawn Manor. Got about 20 ash from across road, a few Oaks from where Bent Oak fell in the river and sugar Maples from bank along road west of house. Lewis Bennett saw my cacti and came back to bring me opuntia. Had a pickup truck so I asked him to haul the 16-ft pieces of the greenhouse down to Hardy’s- 8 miles. Asked $5 but I gave him $10. Picked four quarts strawberries at Crum’s on the way home- $3.75. Baked shortcake for lunch. Planted delphinium, Coral Bells and achilla I got at Botkins in Urbana and mum’s I got at Kingwood last Monday. Also impatiens that I slipped from one’s set out before. Have all beds planted now except west of greenhouse. Will wait until new one [greenhouse] is up.

Dave took English exam and ACT final on computer- averaged 18. High in math- low in English. He mowed with big mower for 2 hours. I trimmed.
