Trella Hemmerly – 1985-11-24

Sunday, November 24, 1985
Hemmerly’s open house- temperature 40° but sunny. Constant parade of lookers. David and family arrived about 11:30 and we had lunch at Wendy’s. Sarah helped pin on berry clusters (corsage for this year) all afternoon. Susannah moved in on the Night Before Christmas display and animated it. Fanny, Floy, Loren and Jesse came. Fanny said she cried when she read my letter telling them how much I love them.

Haldeman’s out for Famous Recipe Chicken, potato salad and baked beans. Also had eggnog and Ice cream. Toasted marshmallows in fireplace. They left about 7:00. David has new VCR and Camera.

Thursday, November 21, 1985 First total freeze.
Temperature 28 froze mums and all the annuals.

Spent two hours trying to straighten out mess made at Savings of America- they changed account number on Dave’s checking account and so Don’s Air Force check was rejected when it was sent for deposit. Savings of America would not give to California Bank the new number. Called me with it, but when I called no one knew what I was talking about and never heard of Gretchen Dierling- finally got someone who asked for Don’s Social Security so may have it straightened out.

Worked on newsletter rest of the day.

Finished planting bulbs. Temperature balmy 74. Planted violas from Jeanne Morehouse. Answered letters from Conception Color Guard members. They begged me to let Dave come back in. We talked it over last night- it would take two days every week and sometimes three so he decided against it. Also $75 a month is pretty steep.

Dave picked up packing case at Jeanne Morehouse’s who has sold her house to Barbara Jordan and is moving to Phoenix with her sister.

Then he went to Mary’s to clean leaves and mow. I took pizza there for supper.

To board meeting- really upset that the trustees for Heritage Preservation Fund were reelected- not one of them has contributed to the fund.

Two Burrough’s Club at 1:00. Nan Weir couldn’t give the program so Donna Wargowski called me. Used Grandpa’s weather extreme story- everyone loved it and added their memories of extremes.

Home at 4:00 expecting Dave here to help put deck furniture away didn’t come home until 6:00- at Oletas studying. Kathy Roush came to pick up Color Guard flags that Dave had and left a packet of letters for me from all the members.

The Samuel Hildreth “Pioneer History of Southeast Ohio” arrived- $175 but a thrill to own it.

Howard gave me a check for $1,000- said for my birthday and Christmas but he had it marked utilities. Figured up gas and electric for last year came to $2,000.

Our first sight of Halley’s Comet as the sky cleared after 16 days of rain. Mary brought her telescope out about 8:00 p.m. and set it up on the hood of her car across the road. Found the Pleiades and just to the right was the fuzzy area they tell us is the comet- a head-on view with no tail- hope the viewing gets better.

Dave woke me with the news that Cat had five kittens but one was born dead and two others had deformed hind feet.

David sent back my Emmanuel M. Sheneman weather records column- liked most of his revisions but I revised again. Spent pm at Center and checked 1934 record heat stories.
