Steadfast

As faithful as the tide are you;
As true as Neptune’s daughter.
I’ll stay right here, nor move, my dear,
Come hell or come high water.

My adoration for you, sweet,
Is deep as any ocean–
But when two oysters fall in love,
That’s every-day devotion!

Together, we may travel far,
In any month that has an “R”.

Sorrow Contemplated

Great unthinkable empty gulfs
Yawn as the time approaches;
Life’s frill colors shall blanch and fade
When loneliness encroaches.

“Face the fact”, I can hear you say,
“And parting can never harm you” —
Still, as Time speeds across his stage,
Does it not, sweet, alarm you?

Mind so tortured can never rest;
Stretched ahead frowns trouble:
Future without you is just a vast
Hopeless and hollowed bubble.

Bubble? Yes, but a bubble rare–
Your face, forever, is mirrored there….

Song For Valentine’s Day, 1953*

Once, when I was young and “free”,
I sang a selfish song of me;

Then, when love, all sparkling new
Hurt me, I sang a song of you.

Now, beat by beat, two hearts discuss
A tender song for both of us.

*And her dad caught me at it! (2-4-53; 1:36 p.m.)

Song for the 14th

He thinks my broken heart’s a myth;
That he, through sentimental goo
And flowers that he plies me with
Can make it whole. I think so too!

Single Track

There’s not a new idea
Nor thought beneath the sun,
Which doesn’t seem to worry
Who requires but one;
And it is old as Adam ,
But popular and true-
My all-absorbing theme-song
Lilts of love, and you!

Scheduled

Beneath a willow by the creek;
Upon a shore the surf is pounding;
Where moonlight plays its hide-and-seek;
Or where cathedral bells are sounding;
In any downtown rendezvous;
Perhaps among familiar faces–
Love, be sure, can come to you
In the most expected places!

Savor And Serve

I never knew
Where rainbows grew ,
Or whether fairies really were;
Not yet aware
Of what bloomed there
On April’s hills, I felt a stir
At your bright smile,
And , afterwhile,
Knew why existence had been flat:
My life lacked love.
One little shove–
And kiss–from you has changed all that!

Sample

One single glance from you a day,
And all my clouds dissolve away.
I can but wonder, then, my sweet:
Can life–without you–be complete?
