If I drove recklessly as you
My car might last a lifetime too!

My car might last a lifetime too!

The place the driver attempts to enter
Who takes his half from out the center.

Diogenes had a rugged quest–
But here is one that tops him:
What I mean is can
You unearth a man
Who at STOP signs fully stops him?

I used to delight in rhymes about
Thanksgiving in my granddad’s day,
And how he used to ride ‘way out .
To “Granny’s”, in his one-hoss shay!
But since gas rationing’s come to us,
I think I’d a whole lot rather hear
A rhyme of auto, train, or bus–
The “Good Old,Days” of just last year!

By traffic’s tangled snarl held fast,
I see a stretch of street at last!
I trod upon the gas–Oh NO!
That sign–“School Zone,” it says, “Go slow.”

Who waves while passing in his car
I possibly could place
If he would move that languid hand
From out in front of face.

When I am driving with the wife,
Roadmaps do not occasion strife.
Her instinct tells my spouse the way,
And instructs me to obey.

Although as a driver
She’s really the sad one,
Her only-accident thus far
Is, she’s never had one.

While it may seem some decrepit
After all the years we’ve kep’ it–
That’s a lot of money (ain’t it?)
For a new car–so we’ll paint it.

Good morning, from over my steering wheel;
Service me for the open road,
And I’ll wind up in a mile of steel
Behind a truck with a load.
Fill ‘er full of good gasoline;
Check, please, the water and oil;
I go to do battle with lights red and green
And a temper that’s ready to boil.
You might spray the windshield with some of that stuff;
Then, sonny, get ready to dodge:
Just thinking of going was driving enough–
I’m heading back for the garage!
