August Sun

Our science says it’s much too hot to burn.
If this is so, I have i lots to unlearn.
It shoots great tongues of flame in leaping masses;
It gives off quantities of well-known gases;
It is the source of nearly all our light,
And moon Is too, which illuminates our night.
Almost a hundred million miles its heat
Has carried, to depopulate the street
Of even insects, whose dry .. dusty whir-r
Rasps from such little shade as does occur.
Our panting hound dog blames the sun. By thunder,
If it’s not burning, then what is, I wonder?

August Fog

The line fence leered out of an August fog
This morning, and on every stump and log
Gray moisture globules winking wetly, tossed
Reflected light about like early frost.

My neighbor-friend, elbowing through the gray,
Passed me half-way upon our mutual hill
With chores upon his mind. He paused to say,
“You almost need a coat against the chill.”

On such a day as this–who can say when–
Slow chemicals begin reaction then,
And in accordance with some ancient, long-lost charts,
Tired summer yields the reins, and autumn starts.

Atom Bomb

A scientist
Experiments;
Critics add
Their two cents;
Technicians tech
As they confer;
Warmongers too
Are heard to purr;
Army men
Frown and conspire;
The nat’l. debt
Bounces higher;
Ministers and such
Abhor it;
My angle? Oh ,
I’m paying for it.

Astronomy Handbook

Binary systems, galaxies,
Deneb, Altair, Antares,
Ecliptic, orbit, parallax,
Spectral lines–whoa up, relax!
I like the stars, but find the book
By contrast dull. May I just look?

Assistant

All by myself
I cannot do
All of the things
God wants me to.

But hope and faith
Can do each task–
For God will help,
If I but ask.

As Ye Sow…

Whatever the question we ask him–
Of idea, origin, cause–
The answer should be familiar
If a child answers merely “Because…”

For it’s sad to record here how often
The same parent, after a pause,
Has answered the child’s earnest question
With an absent-minded “Because…”
