College Education (untitled)

Great thoughts, no doubt, are his who sits
And probes his mind and flogs his wits
To swell the sum of knowledge;
But greater things the man submits
Who thinks his thoughts, but never quits
His term at Hard-knocks College

Collector

Patiently, contentedly,
He catches butterflies;
Sorts and mounts and studies them
While he identifies
Each smallest one. They are,
Besides these happy hours,
Geology, geography,
Summer, sunshine, flowers.

There’s not in any man I know
Enthusiasm so alive!
It keeps his nerves and heart intact-And
himself young at eighty-five.

Cold Start

Is your car these wintry mornings
Lying down upon the job?
Does it cough when you step on it,
Groan and shudder, heave a sob?

Well, don’t biame the old car too much–
Just recall, my son, instead
How YOU groaned and sobbed and shuddered
When YOU had to leave YOUR bed!

Coiffure-Concious

This is what Barbara Frietchie said,
Could we take from the fiction just what’s true:
“Shoot–if you mussed this old gray head
I could maybe get me that new hair-do!”

Cog

I catch my breath; who can but sigh
In wonder at the midnight sky
With splendor strewn? But at the core
I shall not feel inferior, for
We make one great Infinity–
I need the stars–they may need me.

Coffee Break

I thought that I could love her
When with her I ate a snack
And I did ’til I discovered
That she drank her coffee black.

Clouded Picture

“Television unnerved me!” –Costello
Declared in a post-hearing bellow.
Well, some of the rot
That our videos brought
Affected us ditto, dear fellow…
