Trella Hemmerly – 1978-04-15

Saturday April 15th 1978
Off to Desert Arboretum near Globe. Hedgehogs and some apuntias blooming. Rocky would have gone wild at the plant sale- all kinds- greenhouse interesting. Mary and I hiked to the pond. Took Apache Trail past Roosevelt Lake, down Salt River Canyon. Shopped at Tortilla Flat- photographed wildflowers in Superstition Mountains.
For dinner drove to Organ Stop Pizza. Huge room with Wurlitzer theater organ across one end and Tucson sophomore organist- good pizza too.

Friday April 14th 1978
Picked up Mary and Barry and headed for Port Columbus for 8:30 TWA flight to Chicago. Transferred for Phoenix- cloudy. Walt, Olgua and Jannice met us at Sky Harbor at 2:30. Toured Phoenix- saw a roast cooking in neighbors solar oven. Visited Hinegartners in their Rock Shop. They are going on 31 day trip to Far East.
Olgua fed us raisins she had made from grapes. Interesting to reminisce with Walt after all these years and see Olgua backseat drive!

Tuesday April 11th 1978
Katherine Laudenslager in with projected slate of officers for MCHS. Ted Myers won’t take president so they are asking Hal Boncutter. But he called me and said he couldn’t and was against publishing a new History. Richard Carey called about the same time and I told him I’d take president.
Ordered plants from Murphy’s (100) and Lakewood (300) and Plants Alive (50). Cleaned desk and had 2 wedding appointments. Truck radiator rusted out and have to have a new one. Was circulating transmission fluid. Took Lillian to Altrusa to hear an energy program. Mr. Reed tried too hard to be funny. Put together ten sets of Philippine Adventure.

Monday April 10th 1978 letter of appreciation from Bob Fishgrund for my Philippine Journal.
Gorgeous morning Sunny 65° so I worked with Howard cleaning woods. Took close-ups of bloodroot, Scilla, chionodoxia, salt and pepper using polarizing filter. Into shop about 12 and truck still in garage. It was more than a fan belt that made it heat up but I don’t know what. After Mike delivered in my car I brought him and Mary out here to help clean the woods. Howard really appreciative. Back for a wedding appointment and bride brought such a big sample I’m going to make a scarf. Too tired to go to Travelogue.

Sunday April 9th 1978
Not too warm but Howard & I worked in the woods cleaning up the debris left by flood. Nickel’s fodder (last year was first year they’ve had corn in their meadow) wrapped around every tree and Bush. Howard has picked up about 30 carp from pond. Had rump roast that David brought up at Christmas and it was so tender and tasty.
Sorted through negatives to find pictures of the Shuster’s to take to Jackye.

Saturday April 8th 1978 cold not more than 50 degrees.
Howard’s stove in because of dizziness digging for septic tank. Called Saxton to bring back hoe to finish it.
Don’t give the Guffey marriage more than a year. They couldn’t agree on anything while ordering. Had three other weddings appointments and went to Upper Sandusky with a wedding. Tonya did one at Grace Baptist and Cheryl Grogs did her sister’s.
Shopped at Big Bear and had pizza and salad for supper. Wrote to Marjorie Patterson and the Buensucesos. Still some snow on banks on way to Upper but it’s all gone around here.

Kathy Baumann called to say tiles are falling off around bathtub and there is nothing behind them so stopped over to see.
Howard Barkley out to pump out septic tank but wouldn’t dig it out so didn’t do anything after he found it.
Took my car to Race* for new brakes $200!

Snow finally gone even along fence rows!
Gorgeous day. Supper at Turoffs and BBB had ordered a cake for Mary’s birthday and the waitress put candles on the table.
Nice letter from Dean Blanchard. He really appreciated my Philippine story!
